From serious dangers in North Dakota on Tuesday to Illinois on Thursday, this week could cause major weather problems across the north-central section of the country.
Transcript
00:00When we take a look at the current setup for this evening and tonight, we've got a large high-risk
00:04area.
00:05Most of North Dakota fits in this area where we're expecting large areas with damaging wind.
00:11In fact, not just scattered reports of damaging wind, but widespread damaging wind gusts, destructive hail, and also multiple tornadoes.
00:18It's going to be a nasty evening in many of these areas here across North Dakota.
00:22And we're going to be digging into this a little more specifically with many of our updates here this evening.
00:27But we're concerned about Minot and Bismarck, areas like Rugby and Bottineau, North Dakota, with widespread damaging winds in the
00:34meter.
00:34You can see three out of four on the scale, pretty significant.
00:37Now, tomorrow, we have a large area, all of Wisconsin, much of eastern and northeastern parts of Minnesota, much of
00:45eastern Iowa.
00:46The Chicago metro in northern Illinois under a risk for significant damaging wind, as well as more hail and also
00:54isolated tornadoes, a moderate risk for tomorrow.
00:56As this disturbance of the jet stream moves east, let's take a look at how this will play out here
01:01in a couple of cities.
01:03Minneapolis, for example, for Wednesday, spotty downpours and thunderstorms possible even in the early afternoon.
01:09But the main event will be developing nearby and rolling east.
01:13There will be gaps on the radar when it moves through.
01:16So it's not a guarantee that we see severe weather specifically in Minneapolis or Bloomington or St. Paul.
01:21But there will be potential for damaging wind and hail in the area.
01:26Let's take you a little farther east and southeast, same time frame, into Madison, Wisconsin, on Wednesday.
01:32And here, the storms, just by virtue of being a little farther east, will have a little more chance to
01:37organize.
01:38And even in the early part of the afternoon, there will be some noise nearby.
01:41Here we are at 1, 1.30 p.m., with storms closing in on the area near and north of
01:46Milwaukee, up into areas approaching Green Bay.
01:48But there will be another round of storms that follows this.
01:52So some of those storms will be aggressive there.
01:53You can see Chicago on the edge.
01:55And then more spotty, strong storms could follow into the evening there, as well.
01:59So it might be two rounds in the area near Madison, Wisconsin.
02:03Then we take things a step farther.
02:05Here we have Thursday through Thursday night.
02:06And now we've added a high risk for Thursday.
02:10We're expecting to do one of those YouTube live simulcasts, commercial-free here on at least YouTube, on the AccuWeather
02:17YouTube channel.
02:18And, again, we recommend that you follow or subscribe to our AccuWeather YouTube channel.
02:22We have over 2 million subscribers there.
02:25And also, obviously, we'll be here on the AccuWeather network providing coverage of this severe weather event.
02:32But we stay up commercial-free even on the YouTube live stream.
02:36When we may go to brief breaks here on the network.
02:39Large hail, tornadoes.
02:41You can see we're not putting that isolated adjective there in front.
02:44But multiple tornadoes possible.
02:46And widespread damaging wind gusts here through this area.
02:50That will be a big concern.
02:51So we're running from Kansas City up through Chicago and up into really most of lower Michigan, if not all
02:57of the lower peninsula of Michigan.
02:58But we're most concerned about the third biggest city in the nation, Chicago, and areas like Madison, Milwaukee, Rockford.
03:05All big concerns out there.
03:07When we categorize the severe threat here, we've got tremendous amounts of warmth and moisture.
03:12No shortage of those variables.
03:13And there is a, I'd say, moderate dip in the jet stream that will help to drive some of that
03:17severe risk.
03:18So if we kind of take a look at the entire equation, that lands us at a high risk of
03:24severe weather.
03:24High risk is 3 out of 4 on the AccuWeather 4-tiered Severe Threat Index.
03:28So big concerns there over the next few days, especially across the Midwest.
03:33Now, there's also been some very heavy rain in some of these areas.
03:36So flooding will also be an issue.
03:38And in the short term, another story that we're going to be tracking with some of our other updates.
03:42A little east of the primary severe risk zone for the Dakotas, we're also tracking some drenching downpours.
03:49And there have been flash flood warnings ongoing in areas like Lexington, Kentucky.
03:53So that's another side story.
03:55So stick around for more on that as well.
