00:00Across Africa, incredible homes are raising the bar of modern design.
00:04This series gives you a front row seat to unapologetically stylish spaces.
00:10The kind you can't help but save, screenshot and dream about.
00:18This house gets it.
00:20Big volume, big light, big wow moments.
00:27Set on a leafy small holding in Johannesburg, this is a home to live large and loud without losing the
00:34calm.
00:36Today, Pelesa Tembe steps inside a space designed by Adrian Morris of Morris & Co.
00:41Here, barn-style architecture meets a fabulous, truly livable twist.
00:46Hi, Adrian.
00:47Hi, buddy. Welcome to this amazing property.
00:50Have you noticed how amazing the garden is?
00:52It is. And I'm so glad that I wore these colours because I feel like I stand out in and
00:56amongst the greenery.
00:57And the pool is just, this whole pool area is really incredible.
01:00The poolside and garden are perfectly dressed, like they're ready and waiting for the party to arrive.
01:08What a beautiful entertainment space. Can you tell me more about this project?
01:12Well, when they approached us to look at this project and having got to know them really well over the
01:17last few years,
01:18we knew that I think what they would want is a home that lives really effortlessly, but entertains brilliantly.
01:24So, when we arrived on the site, there were two existing cottages.
01:28Both of the cottages were quite small and located to the south boundary of the property, leaving a really generous
01:32north-facing garden.
01:33We then, in looking at it, decided to extend what would then eventually become the entertainment wing onto the eastern
01:40boundary,
01:41which would then open up the west for sunsets. So, they're really beautiful sunsets in this part of Johannesburg.
01:46And then we started to build the brief out from there in terms of how the rest of the spaces
01:50would flow.
01:51What was really interesting is that the space between the two cottages was the dimension of a generous room.
01:57So, it wasn't too big and it wasn't too small.
01:59So, we decided to create this big glass barn that connected the two existing structures together.
02:05And that really became the kind of heart of the home.
02:09Everywhere you turn, there's a spot to pause.
02:13Hallside, tucked away patios, little corners made for sitting, scrolling and switching off.
02:20Where we're standing now feels like such a clever way to enjoy indoor-outdoor living with this entertainment space.
02:26Correct. So, this is the main entertainment area.
02:29Yeah. We've got a sofa area, a lounge area here.
02:31There's an outdoor dining space and there's a really generous outdoor kitchen over here.
02:35The pizza oven, braille, gas braille.
02:38So, it's a really wonderful space to entertain.
02:40And just when you think the party stays outside, the house pulls you back in.
02:46Oh, wow. What a fun wine room.
02:49Yes. So, the client is an avid collector of wine.
02:53So, we located this room on the southeast side of the house.
02:56So, it's nice and cool.
02:57It connects to a beautiful little garden, which then connects back through to the entertainment patio.
03:04One step away from the wine is where everyone ends up next.
03:09Adrian, we're in the kitchen now and so many things are already standing out.
03:13Can you tell me about your design approach here?
03:14So, the clients love entertaining and cooking.
03:17So, we position the kitchen as the centerpiece to the big barn.
03:21And we design the kitchen that it is both kitchen and bar at the same time.
03:25As you know, whenever you entertain, everyone always ends up with a cliche in the kitchen.
03:29So, we designed this deliberately that it could fulfill both purposes.
03:33And again, it's the centerpiece to this big entertainment area, which is in the center of the home.
03:40But with a house like this, obviously, there's more.
03:44Sheep statues included.
03:47You really have that opportunity to truly enjoy the home.
03:50It doesn't matter where you are within the space.
03:52I mean, right now, we're in the courtyard.
03:54Yes.
03:54So, this is a little courtyard on the south side of the house.
03:56So, it's lovely and cool here in summer.
03:59And it was just really intended as a nice space to retreat to.
04:02But it's really a little oasis.
04:04And again, one of the principles we try and bring to all projects is a little bit of surprise and
04:09delight.
04:09So, there's this fun tiled rug, if you want to call it, that anchors the seating out here.
04:14And then the water feature behind, when it's on, brings a wonderful white noise to the property, to the interior
04:21of the home.
04:23Something we haven't spoken about yet are the private areas, the bedrooms and the bathrooms.
04:27What was your design approach there?
04:29So, following on the principle we use, there we ask in the home about connecting indoor spaces to outdoor spaces.
04:35All the ground floor bedrooms, which are all secondary bedrooms, all connect to a small garden or a small courtyard.
04:41Upstairs, the main bedroom opens out onto its own patio, because waking up should come with options.
04:49And then there's the shower.
04:51Indoors, outdoors, garden views included.
04:56From big social energy to proper switch-off time, this house does both.
05:01So, who's coming over first?
05:04Everyone or just your besties?
