00:02Canockchase is one of those places where the Midlands seems to open out. Roads and
00:07towns are close by but step onto the paths and the noise starts to fade. There
00:13are wide stretches of heathland, quiet woodland, forest tracks and views that
00:18change with the weather. It's a place for walking boots, bicycles, dog leads,
00:23picnics and slow afternoons in the open air. For many families it's one of the
00:28easiest countryside escapes in Staffordshire. Now the chase has a long
00:33history. Its name goes back to the idea of a hunting chase and in medieval times
00:39this landscape formed part of a wider royal forest. Over the centuries people
00:44have used it for farming, mining, timber, military training and recreation. That
00:50mixture has left a landscape with many layers. It's not a polished park, it's
00:55wider than that with open ground, tree cover, sandy tracks and reminders of how
01:01people have lived, worked and trained here. Today Canockchase is protected as a
01:07national landscape. That state recognises its special character from lowland heath to
01:13woodland and wildlife habitats. The heathland is especially important and
01:18also fragile so visitors are encouraged to keep to the paths, take litter home and
01:24give nature space. It's part of what makes the chase feel so distinctive. You can
01:30find broad skies and open views in one direction then turn a corner and be
01:34surrounded by trees. Now there's plenty to see without needing a complicated plan.
01:40Canockchase has popular walking and cycling routes including trails for
01:44families and more experienced riders. There are places for a short wonder, longer
01:49routes for a proper stretch of the legs and visitor facilities that make the
01:53area welcoming for a straightforward day out. The chase also carries powerful
01:58wartime history. During the first world war large military camps were built here
02:03for training troops before they were sent overseas. The area also became linked to
02:09prisoner of war camps and later remembrance. One of the most reflective
02:13places is the German military cemetery where thousands of German and Austrian
02:18servicemen from the two world wars are buried. For visitors it adds depth
02:23to the day outs reminding people that this beautiful landscape has also seen
02:28serious chapters of history. Canock itself sits right on the doorstep. It gives the
02:34chase a practical base with shops, places to eat and the feel of a friendly
02:39Staffordshire town close to open countryside. The appeal of Canockchase is
02:44simple. It offers space without feeling remote, history without feeling heavy and
02:49countryside that can be enjoyed in many different ways. For a gentle Midlands day
02:54out it remains one of Staffordshire's strongest choices.
