Nick Tyrrell speaks at the Liberal Party's federal council in May 2026
Transcript
00:00I became the president of the ACT Liberals during, and was in that position during the last
00:07territory campaign and then the last federal campaign. The impact of the very specific sort
00:14of Canberra-focused attacks on the ACT and public service and all that kind of stuff wasn't helpful.
00:20But it wasn't just unhelpful to us. Does anyone know what proportion of the public service
00:27is based in Canberra? Except for Claire. Oh, she's not here. She's the... All right. What is the
00:34proportion of... I'll tell you, it's 36.9. It's about a little bit over a third. Because you know what
00:41we did when we were in government? We decentralised. Or we let the Nats decentralise. And so the public
00:47servants that you think are all in Canberra are actually in Western Australia. They're in Queensland.
00:54They're in New South Wales. And you know where that anti-public service mantra of the last
01:01election cost us votes? In electorate's marginal seats that have high proportions of public
01:08servants. Like Robertson, where we decentralise departments to. Like Gilmore, where we decentralise
01:14departments to. And like Eden Manero, right next to Canberra with a lot of commuters into
01:19Canberra and public servants. This is not a defence of a bloated public service. This is an affirmation
01:26that we need an effective, sensible approach to the public service in Australia if we want to win government.
