Transcript
00:00Welcome, everyone, to the Royal Rumble.
00:05The Royal Rumble, the annual 30 Superstar Spectacular that has become
00:10a highlight on the WWE calendar for nearly 40 years.
00:13Every man for himself.
00:16And the Rumble events of the 2000s showcase some of the event's greatest
00:19highlights, from awe-inspiring feats- Wow, look at this, look at this.
00:25To jaw-dropping returns.
00:27John Cena is number 30.
00:30To career-defining victories.
00:32Triple H is going to WrestleMania.
00:35The decade captures the unpredictable nature that makes WWE so
00:38incredibly special.
00:40Well, this is over, the Rockets won the record.
00:43Today, we look back at the best Royal Rumble moments of the 2000s.
00:47This is WWE's Greatest Moments.
01:09Welcome, everyone, to WWE's Greatest Moments.
01:12I'm Michael Cole, and on this edition, we're looking back at some of the most
01:15iconic Royal Rumble moments of the 2000s.
01:18The rules of a Royal Rumble match are simple.
01:21Beginning with two superstars, a new superstar joins the fray at equally timed
01:26intervals, until all 30 competitors have entered.
01:30Participants aim to eliminate their opponents by throwing them over the top rope with both
01:34feet touching the floor.
01:35With the prize being a World Championship opportunity, at the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania.
01:43Bayley's going to WrestleMania!
01:45There have been plenty of dominant performers in Rumble match history, but in the 2001 Royal
01:51Rumble, the Big Red Machine Kane showed us just how much of a monster he truly is.
01:59At number six, the Big Red Machine Kane!
02:02Kane was so dominant in the 2001 Royal Rumble.
02:06What power!
02:08My God, what strength!
02:09Kane is cleaning house, Kane!
02:11Great opportunity for that character to play to its strengths.
02:17Oh, God!
02:18Good grief!
02:19Kane showed up.
02:21He was unstoppable, unbeatable.
02:22The Royal Rumble match was a pretty definitive moment in Kane's career, actually.
02:27The Big Red Machine is going crazy here!
02:31Oh, oh!
02:31Kane eliminated the wrong death!
02:33He's having this legendary day where he eliminates, I believe, 11 competitors.
02:38Kane has eliminated more people in the Royal Rumble than any competitor in history.
02:44Eleven!
02:44At that time setting a record for Kane, it's definitely going to be one that's going to live
02:49in his memory for many, many years.
02:50I have never seen anyone more dominant in the Royal Rumble than Kane!
02:57Since its inception in 1988, the Royal Rumble match has been known for its unpredictability.
03:02Only one of Shawn Michaels' feet hit the floor!
03:07Shawn Michaels has won the Royal Rumble!
03:10But perhaps nothing was more shocking than one particular interaction at the 2002 Royal Rumble
03:15between Tough Enough's inaugural winner, Maven.
03:18I'm gonna work hard from this day forward to be one of the next WWF superstars.
03:23And the American badass, The Undertaker.
03:28Look up to our next entrant!
03:33Oh my!
03:34Business is about to pick up!
03:37In the 2002 Royal Rumble, we see a super-dominant Undertaker.
03:42This shard belongs to one of the most evil individuals in the history of the WWF!
03:49There's one thing I wouldn't want to be!
03:51What's that, Kane?
03:52Next!
03:54Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
03:56Oh no!
03:57You have this young kid from Tough Enough, and The Undertaker, one of the favorites going
04:02into the Royal Rumble.
04:03It's like Buster Douglas and Mike Tyson.
04:05I gotta admit, I was pretty, pretty nervous.
04:07Maven getting in the Royal Rumble, the first male Tough Enough winner.
04:12We had been fighting with The Undertaker a little bit right before that.
04:15The Hardy just trying to get some retribution.
04:18And there ended up being a distraction where he was turned around.
04:21Get your ass!
04:23Get out of my room!
04:25Oh my God!
04:27My God!
04:28Maven just eliminated The Undertaker!
04:30That arena is shocking.
04:34Undertaker is shocking.
04:36Maven was even shocked.
04:38The people that were there that night, they definitely got their money's worth.
04:42And then some.
04:44I would do that every day if I could.
04:46It was unbelievable.
04:48That is the biggest shocker I've ever seen at the Royal Rumble!
04:55At the turn of the millennium, the WWE Tag Team Division was known for its wild action.
05:01Two defining duos of the time were the Hardy Boys and the Dudley Boys.
05:06The tandems were in a heated rivalry, taking turns sending one another through a particular piece of furniture.
05:12The Dudleys have attempted to destroy the Hardys right through a table.
05:18And at the Royal Rumble 2000, the Hardys and Dudleys would collide in WWE's first ever Tag Team Tables match.
05:29The site couldn't be any bigger!
05:32We're in the sold out Madison Square Garden!
05:35The match only ends when both Hardeners have been driven through tables.
05:40I wanted it taken to the next level.
05:43I wanted people to be able to talk about this match, especially because we had the backdrop of Madison Square
05:47Garden and the Royal Rumble.
05:50Look out, Jeff! On the rail!
05:52Boom!
05:54This was the moment we had our chance to show them that we could do the table deal as well
05:59and do it just as good, if not better, than they do it.
06:02We got it!
06:04And both Harden scored airborne!
06:06That match was like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
06:09I got it!
06:11It became like an amazing storytelling concept of a car crash.
06:17Good lord! Matt Hardy just got folded up like an accordion!
06:22You're keeping Scott home!
06:24You're looking for either D-Bond Dudley or Jeff Hardy!
06:27The next one to go through the table!
06:29Oh, here we go!
06:30MSG just like pumping us up to put on a hell of a performance and, you know, and risk our
06:34bodies.
06:36Leave on to the table!
06:37Jeff Hardy!
06:38No, no, Jeff!
06:39No, Jeff!
06:40No, no!
06:42Forgot!
06:42That's it!
06:43Tom Barrow!
06:44On the balcony!
06:45No, no, no!
06:46Deception 5!
06:48Revive!
06:48They've won!
06:49He tore the house down in Madison Square Garden.
06:56The Royal Rumble has brought us some of the most remarkable championship matches in the world.
07:00WWE history.
07:01In 2008, the Viper Randy Orton was in the midst of a memorable WWE Championship reign.
07:07I'm going to be more ruthless and dominant than ever!
07:11Yet the charismatic enigma, Jeff Hardy, had his sights set on dethroning the champ, by any means necessary.
07:19Oh!
07:22Oh!
07:23Oh!
07:23What length would Jeff Hardy go to win his first ever WWE Championship?
07:30Can that young man tonight realize a lifelong dream?
07:35Kind of surreal that I was in that position.
07:38I'm exactly where I dreamt of being in wrestling Randy Orton in MSG.
07:42Randy Orton may be wondering if this is the last time he'll be able to hold that WWE Championship.
07:49The style, unlike anybody else's, we tore it up.
07:53Jeff Hardy spent his entire life working towards this moment.
07:56Jeff Hardy really started finding his legs and became immensely popular.
08:03Hardy will physically abuse his own body to win a contest.
08:06We know that.
08:07Oh!
08:09And there's some physical abuse right there.
08:11I knew I was close and I felt like it was going to happen.
08:16Hands there!
08:16With the fake dome!
08:17Oh no!
08:18RKO!
08:19RKO!
08:20Oh my God!
08:21My God!
08:22The RKO out of nowhere!
08:24Everybody thought that Jeff was going to win, but we had a great match.
08:28Once you get two athletes of that caliber, you just have so much respect for them, no matter
08:33who you're rooting for.
08:36The 2000s signified a passing of the torch to a new generation of up and coming WWE superstars.
08:42But no two individuals truly defined this decade quite like John Cena and Batista.
08:48These rising stars were eager to reach the top of the mountain.
08:51And there was no better way to catapult yourself towards championship glory than winning the Royal
08:56Rumble match and earning a title opportunity at the showcase of the Immortals, WrestleMania.
09:00Come on, Johnny!
09:02Cena eliminated Kane!
09:04Look at this!
09:06And Kyle eliminated!
09:08Batista has come to dominate!
09:11At the 2005 Royal Rumble, Cena and Batista would fight tooth and nail to the very end.
09:16Cena, Batista, the final two!
09:22One of these two will be in the main event at WrestleMania!
09:28It was funny because I think when I picked him up for the bomb, he came up with so much
09:35force
09:35that he literally just flung me over the rope, so we both went over.
09:40They both went out!
09:42Cena and Batista go over the top rope at the same time.
09:46Every replay was inconclusive.
09:51He got back in the ring and didn't know what was going on.
09:55He's got two winners of the Royal Rumble!
09:58They hit Mr. McMahon's music.
10:01That's the chairman of the WWE!
10:03On the way into the ring, he ruptures both of his quadriceps.
10:08So, he can no longer stand.
10:11Per order of the chairman, this match be restarted!
10:16Well, that sounds good!
10:19Batista and John Cena have to recover from this absolute debacle.
10:25Overpowering John Cena!
10:27No, no, no!
10:28That was absolute pure chaos.
10:33I've never seen anything like that happen, but it became historic.
10:37It's one of the most memorable Rumble moments in history.
10:40It was not without controversy, but Batista will be in the main event at WrestleMania 21!
10:49Throughout WWE history, there have been a number of true underdogs.
10:53Superstars who are given the short end of the stick, who must fight their way toward ultimate glory.
10:58The Royal Rumble match may provide the shot certain superstars need to break through their glass ceiling.
11:04In 2006, the high-flying fan favorite Rey Mysterio drew the ill-fated number two spot in the Royal Rumble
11:11match.
11:11Oh, God, you gotta be kidding me.
11:14With the odds fully against the legendary luchador, would Rey be able to go bell to bell and take home
11:20the greatest victory of his career?
11:25Triple H, number one!
11:28Here comes Mysterio!
11:30To be number two in the Royal Rumble, your chances are not that great.
11:36Rey Mysterio dedicated a victory in the Royal Rumble matchup to his late friend, Eddie Guerrero,
11:43and paying homage to Eddie tonight in a lowrider.
11:46There was an empty spot. I needed Eddie there. But he was there in spirit.
11:53There's the speed and quickness of Rey Mysterio taking out the game at the D.
11:57There's only one guy you wanted to win.
12:00This Royal Rumble matchup has been going for one hour.
12:07Triple H eliminated!
12:10Put down to Mysterio!
12:12Of course I want Rey to overcome and win the damn thing.
12:16Rey Mysterio, who came in at number 30! Rey Mysterio, who came in at number two!
12:22Mysterio!
12:23He did it! He did it! He did it! He did it! He did it! No way!
12:26Rey Mysterio did it!
12:29The explosion of the fans.
12:31Eddie!
12:32This was a picture-perfect moment.
12:35A highlight of my career.
12:37Rey Mysterio is going to WrestleMania!
12:43The Royal Rumble match has proven to be no rest for the weary.
12:46Speaking from personal experience, of course.
12:49Look at this clown.
12:50He actually thinks he's gonna go to WrestleMania!
12:53One minor distraction or wrong move in your dreams of headlining WrestleMania can be squashed in an instant.
12:59You guys just cost me my spot at WrestleMania!
13:01A good rule of thumb for every competitor is to always be ready.
13:07I brought my two Roman soldiers, Pasquale and Francesco!
13:14Three!
13:15Two!
13:16One!
13:18Three!
13:19Two!
13:20Santino Morella!
13:22The former Intercontinental Champion!
13:25This year, I was determined to make an impact.
13:32What?!
13:32Good Lord!
13:33What the?!
13:33The man of the record!
13:35I wasn't ready!
13:36I wasn't ready!
13:37I wasn't ready!
13:40No, it wasn't me!
13:41No!
13:42No!
13:42I'm going back in!
13:43He wasn't ready!
13:44He thought he was gonna get in the ring.
13:45He was gonna do a little stretching.
13:47He was gonna get ready because I've talked to him about this at length.
13:50Let's see if we can time this in our head.
13:511,001!
13:52Yeah, he didn't even last two seconds!
13:54The popular side is this.
13:56He has the record for being in the Royal Rumble for the shortest amount of time.
13:59Santino, man, filling in the record book, but not in the way he would have liked.
14:03That will always be played every Royal Rumble.
14:05One second!
14:07And no redos, Santino!
14:09I don't know if I'll ever be ready.
14:14Stone Cold Steve Austin has produced countless memorable moments over his historic WWE career,
14:20including two Royal Rumble victories in 1997, and again in 1998.
14:27Surely there was no way Stone Cold could win three, right?
14:32But if you get your ass in it, Stone Cold's gonna throw your ass out of it, and that's about
14:36a block.
14:46It's Stone Cold!
14:48This ain't gonna be Pretty King!
14:50But it's gonna be good!
14:51I was ready to go.
14:54The game!
14:56What?
14:56Triple A's from behind!
14:58Bam!
14:58Hit me just like that.
15:00Austin has been busted over!
15:01He's never even got into the ring!
15:03That's when the ball started rolling.
15:06And I got Austin's on fire!
15:09How's he doing this?
15:10Right!
15:11Bop!
15:12Decking dudes!
15:13You know what I'm saying?
15:14Knocking them out.
15:14Eliminating them in the process.
15:16Austin has eliminated Haku!
15:18If you've been in a Royal Rumble with Stone Cold, you most likely got a Mud Bowl stomped in your
15:24ass.
15:24Oh!
15:25The stars!
15:26Austin got a hit!
15:28Oh!
15:30Kane is out!
15:31Stone Cold is going to WrestleMania!
15:33To eliminate Kane, one of the biggest, strongest, most impressive WWE superstars in history.
15:40I remember it vividly.
15:43I knew the rattlesnake could win this thing!
15:45Winning three Royal Rumbles is unheard of.
15:49What a Royal Rumble!
15:54We've witnessed some truly unbelievable Royal Rumble finishes over the years.
15:58From nail biting back and forth, to sensational last minute comebacks.
16:03Edge is here!
16:06No other match in WWE epitomizes that it ain't over till it's over.
16:11Wait a minute here!
16:13Fred Harden eliminated Stone Cold and neither referee saw it!
16:17The 2007 Royal Rumble featured 30 tough participants all vying for a quintessential victory.
16:23Eliminations would ensue and once the dust settled, only two future Hall of Famers remain.
16:28The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, one of these men are going to WrestleMania!
16:36The final two men, perhaps the biggest stars in the history of the WWE!
16:42Like you're talking about the greatest of the great in the ring together.
16:47Every time that they were in the ring together, it just felt like magic.
16:50How many times do you get a chance to see two legends go at it with everything on the line?
16:55I was gonna have a long amount of time out there with Taker to do a lot.
17:03It was really hard to mess something like this up and not make it something memorable.
17:08Shawn Michaels going for the victory! Undertaker hanging on!
17:10Telling you, we're watching history!
17:13They literally had their own match at the end of the Rumble match.
17:18This is a moment you're gonna tell your kids about, your grandkids!
17:22The two guys that respect each other, they're at the top of their games.
17:27You can't ask for more than that.
17:30Quick, the sweet chin music!
17:32Oh, caught!
17:33Whoa, whoa, whoa!
17:34And it's Shawn Michaels!
17:36This is a Rumble.
17:37Last two, it was one of the greatest of all time.
17:42Shawn Michaels and Undertaker, exchanging glasses, pure respect!
17:47We have seen a classic!
17:50It's now time for our number one moment, embrace yourself.
17:54This one's gonna hurt.
17:55In January 2000, WWE Champion Triple H ruled over WWE with an iron fist.
18:01The game quickly identified frequent foe Mick Foley as a threat to his reign and sought out his immediate demise.
18:07Why don't you bring it down here right now?
18:10Yet Triple H had not considered that Foley had a trick up his sleeve.
18:13But I think the WWF fans deserve a substitute in that match.
18:20His name is Cactus Jack!
18:24At the 2000 Royal Rumble, the champ was set to face the third and most dangerous face of Foley in
18:30an unforgiving street fight.
18:35At the moment, that man is the best there is in the game.
18:39But that man will do anything he can to become the WWF champion.
18:43There was something to prove for both of us in that match, which was we both should be in that
18:48main event spot.
18:49And the street fight for the WWF title is underway!
18:55Headlining the venue I used to take trains to and hitchhike to.
19:00And now I'm wrestling for the championship.
19:02I'm with one of the greatest of all time in Triple H.
19:05And he's bringing out the best in me, and I'm not too far behind in pushing him.
19:11Look at that!
19:12What?
19:13Is that?
19:14That looks like Bob Warren!
19:20We both want it to be great and were willing to do anything to make it great.
19:24I don't know.
19:26I don't think.
19:26Is it?
19:27Oh God!
19:27Oh my God!
19:28It's the tax!
19:29We use them in the most meaningful of ways.
19:32Is it?
19:33Look at that!
19:33Oh my God!
19:36Oh my God!
19:36Oh my God!
19:37Cactus Jack is a human pinprish!
19:40There was some stuff in there that he had to talk me into.
19:43Pedigree and the tax and all that stuff like...
19:46Oh my God!
19:47Oh my God!
19:49Pedigree on the thumb tax!
19:51That's it!
19:52Got him!
19:53My God!
19:53My God!
19:55It's over!
19:55My God!
19:56It's over!
19:57I was so happy with the match.
19:59We'll always be grateful for Triple H for bringing out the best in me.
20:03That match was a bona fide main event making match for both guys that were in that match.
20:11The damnedest match that any of us have ever witnessed!
20:17An absolute awesome matchup in every sense of the word.
20:21Triple H and Cactus Jack took each other to their limits.
20:25Another classic encounter to enrich the legacy of the Royal Rumble.
20:30Well that'll do it for this edition of WWE's Greatest Moments.
20:33We hope you have enjoyed this look back at the most memorable and breathtaking Royal Rumble moments of the 2000s.
