00:04You know, guys, you know, Survey, I hate to say it as an offensive player, but the defense won the
00:10day today.
00:11This is your New York Post post-practice report, minicamp edition.
00:14The Giants just wrapped up minicamp practice number one, long-time New York Post sports columnist Steve Survey here, Brandon
00:21London.
00:22All right, before we get into it, we have to talk about the elephant of the room.
00:26Abdul Carter limped off the field today.
00:29John Harbaugh doesn't seem to be worried.
00:32He said that he got to roll his ankle, but again, doesn't seem to be worried.
00:36We'll keep an eye on that.
00:38And then we have to talk about, since we talked about the elephant in the room, the two goats that
00:42were on the field.
00:43Oh, I like that. Very good. Very creative.
00:46See, we had Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson, Giants legends, NFL legends talk to the defense today.
00:54What do you think this team got out of hearing from two NFL greats like a Lawrence Taylor and a
01:02Harry Carson?
01:03Yeah, after practice, you could hear a pin drop as the team gathered around these two goats, Hall of Fame
01:09legends.
01:09And they expressed to John Harbaugh's giants that New York City expects a certain standard, which the New York Knicks
01:19are upholding now, and play like giants, play the way the franchise expects giants to play.
01:29And they took it to heart.
01:32You know, John Harbaugh has won a championship, but he hasn't won here in New York.
01:35And he's here to bring one to New York.
01:38And he was tempted to ask for LT and Harry Carson's autograph today.
01:44But he refrained.
01:46But he was happy to have them relay a message that he has relayed to this team about winning a
01:55championship.
01:56Yeah, and you can see how that message is carried over into that locker room.
02:02Tremaine Edmonds, Brian Burns, every player that spoke at the podium has talked about what Harbs brings, how he's like,
02:09how it's like an open door type policy.
02:12You can go in, you can talk to him about everything.
02:15Tremaine Edmonds said he's a man of quotes, man of many quotes.
02:18And Isaiah likely told me, walking away, that, of course he's going to say this, but I think he honestly
02:25believes it.
02:26John Harbaugh can and will bring a championship to New York.
02:30And those are two words Cam Scadaboo just pulls by in the porch right there.
02:35I think Scadaboo, by the way, you want to talk about how healthy he looks?
02:39Yeah, he looks great.
02:39He looks great out there.
02:41Looks like he's up to speed.
02:42Like that ankle is ready for him to get back out there and compete at a higher level.
02:48Obviously, the Giants are going to roll him into things.
02:51You're going to have him do some individual periods, maybe not as much competition periods.
02:56But Cam Scadaboo, which we thought may not be ready for the season.
03:00A lot of people thought when you saw his leg dangling there against, you know, Philly in Philadelphia, Cam Scadaboo
03:06looks like he'll be ready to return to the field for this football team.
03:11But go ahead, go ahead.
03:12Well, I mean, obviously, they need him as soon as possible because Malik Nabors, I don't expect to see him
03:17before October.
03:19And Scadaboo, by the way, can be used in the passing game as well.
03:23He caught 24 passes last year in his eight games as a Giant, as a rookie.
03:29And Tyrone Tracy can be a weapon for Jackson Dart.
03:32And a guy that impressed me today was Malachi Fields.
03:36What did you think?
03:36Yeah, Tyrone Tracy Jr. had a touchdown pass from Jameis Winston on the wheel route.
03:40We continue to see how he is a dual threat when it comes to being able to run the ball
03:46out of the backfield, but also catch passes.
03:48I think Malachi Fields, I keep telling people, he could potentially be your wide receiver too, or at least a
03:55starter by week six to eight.
03:58And I say it because he came down with another incredible catch where he went up and got a deep
04:04ball from Jackson Dart in the back of the end zone.
04:08It's about a 40, 35, 40-yard throw off of a scramble, and he makes a beautiful play, I believe,
04:15on Greg Newsome, the second in the back of the end zone.
04:19That kid continues to show why they traded into the third round to go get him.
04:25The knock was his speed because of the 40 time that he ran at the combine, but he shows that
04:31he has game speed.
04:32He has practice speed, and when the ball is in the air, he continues to show that all the players
04:38coming by with all the cars.
04:39That was Dante Turbo Miller right there.
04:43He got a nice little turbo package, the turbo kit in his car right there.
04:47But Malachi Fields, an apple a day keeps the dentist away.
04:51A big catch a day puts you within the starters by week four or week six, and that kid continues
04:58to show his catch radius.
04:59Now, it's interesting for me that, notice how many tall giants Harbaugh has now?
05:06Yes.
05:07Malachi Fields is what, 6'4"?
05:09Yeah, 6'4".
05:10Isaiah Likely, who I think, now don't tell, I hope my fantasy football competitors are not watching this, but I'm
05:17drafting him very high.
05:19Isaiah Likely, he's 6'4", right?
05:21You should, you should.
05:21He's 6'4".
05:22And on defense, you've got those towers in the middle of the defense, Arbel Reese, 6'4".
05:27Yep.
05:27Tremaine Edmonds, who I think is 6'5", he's listed 6'4", 6'4".
05:31A lot of tall, Harbaugh likes his Giants tall, and he likes them big.
05:35But, yeah, Malachi Fields could be a big red zone target, along with Isaiah Likely.
05:43Yeah, Isaiah Likely, you see how they're going to use him.
05:45He's, they're moving him all around the field.
05:48He plays at the wide receiver position.
05:50I saw him run a go route earlier today.
05:53He's a threat in the slot.
05:54He is a mismatch.
05:56I think he is going to add, he's going to add to Jackson Dart's development going into that second year.
06:01And, I mean, I mean, that's a great play by you, being the Joe Shane of fantasy football by grabbing
06:08him in your fantasy.
06:09Because he is going to be the leading receiver until Malik Nabors gets healthy, I feel like.
06:14Absolutely, you have to.
06:16Especially with Malik Nabors being out now, a guy that I think that can kind of compete with him when
06:21it comes to some of the targets.
06:23Maybe week three, week four, is a Malachi Fields, depending on how he picks up the offense.
06:29You see them coaching him.
06:31You see him getting coached up.
06:32Every time he does something, they're always talking to him.
06:35Step back into the football.
06:36Do X, Y, Z, because you can tell they're getting him ready with what Coach Coughlin used to say.
06:41Don't worry about, yes, you've got to worry about the X's and O's, but the Y's.
06:45Know and know you know.
06:46So you see Matt Nagy, you see Greg Roman, you see these coaches trying to get him ready.
06:51Because I think this is a kid that they've identified is going to play right away, and he's going to
06:57get targets early.
06:58And as part of his draft profile, I believe they like the fact that he's a willing blocker, correct?
07:03Yes, absolutely.
07:03Well, and because Harbaugh wants to run the ball, Scadaboo running behind CeCe Maunoa, that's no day at the beach
07:13for opposing defenses, right?
07:14The personnel is there on offense.
07:17I think when you look at this offense and you look at some of the guys they have and some
07:22of the ability and skill sets that these guys have,
07:25a lot of them that carried over from last year, you're like, how did this team win four games?
07:29But it seems like to me with what we're seeing, Matt Nagy, Greg Roman, and Brian Callahan,
07:35remember everyone worried about if there are going to be too many cooks in the kitchen.
07:38You're seeing how these guys are trying to identify each one of these weapons skill set
07:43and put them in position to do some real damage.
07:47Now, right now, they're still in pajamas, helmets, jerseys.
07:51It's only minicamp number one.
07:53Correct.
07:54Only minicamp, but you were very impressed by the secondary.
07:57Absolutely.
07:57I thought the defense had a great day today.
08:00We've talked to players before about the impact of new defensive coordinator Denard Wilson,
08:05and we heard it from Tremaine Edmonds when he talked about how he allows them to do what they do.
08:11And any time that, it's cliche from a football player,
08:15but any time you say one of your coaches allows you to do what you do,
08:20that's, again, another coach that has identified skill sets
08:24and said that we're not going to try and squish a square into a round hole.
08:30I mean, yeah, a square.
08:30Well, I got you.
08:31Yeah, a rectangle into a triangle hole or whatever like that.
08:35I don't know.
08:35But you've identified these guys and how you can get the most of them.
08:39And this is, of course, without a pass rush.
08:41This is without pass rush.
08:42So right now, we won't see until the pads come on, obviously,
08:45but I don't think Tremaine Edmonds or Arvell Reese are going to shy from any sort of contact when the
08:50pads come on.
08:51Look, Deontay Banks, what are your thoughts on him?
08:53I think Deontay Banks, from the practices that we've seen, I've seen the effort.
08:57I think that's the biggest thing.
08:59We know the skill set is there.
09:00You better see the effort or John Harbaugh is going to get you out of here.
09:03We know the skill set is there.
09:05Big, tall, athletic, fast, can play the football when he gets his head back.
09:10But we wanted to see the effort, and you're seeing it not only from –
09:14and it starts in the individual periods.
09:16There were times last year where he looked a little checked out during individual periods.
09:20And I'm not trying to take a step back and talk about last year, but this year he looks into
09:26it.
09:26He looks like he sees an opportunity to maybe not save his career, but save his time here.
09:33And maybe get that second contract here.
09:36That says a lot when they don't pick up your fifth option and you're the first-round pick.
09:40So now it seems like a light has been clicked on when it comes to this guy.
09:44But, again, I see the effort.
09:45Well, look, Harbaugh's given him a second chance, and he's given Evan Neal a second chance.
09:50Both former first-round picks by Paul Dottino – or not by Dottino, I'm sorry.
09:57Who's standing right there behind us.
09:58He was standing right there by Joe Shane.
10:02And now it's up to them to prolong their giant careers or head somewhere else.
10:08But you love these type of second chances, especially when you have a head coach like this come in.
10:13Because just think of when John Harbaugh took over and he walked in on his introductory press conference,
10:19and I say it all the time, he walked in like Conor McGregor.
10:22Like, I own this thing.
10:24$20 million a year, I own this place.
10:26But what did he not have to do?
10:28Well, I walk in that way, too, but nobody notices.
10:30But what did he not have to do that former hires have had to do?
10:36Sell their resume.
10:38Hey, I think I'm going to do – hey, I'm Joe Judge.
10:41We're going to do this.
10:42As Bill Parcells used to say, he has pelts on the wall.
10:45Yes, absolutely.
10:46And he commands immediate respect and credibility as soon as he steps into the room.
10:53So if you're a player and you've been – especially a first-round pick.
10:57I was undrafted, so the effort was going to be there every – during the walkthrough.
11:01I was going too hard at times.
11:03But if you're a former first-round pick, everyone's calling you – the B word is coming out.
11:09And not female dog, bust.
11:11People are starting to call you that.
11:13This is the guy.
11:14This is the head coach that you want to come in.
11:17And for a Taye Banks to go even further, John Harbaugh got the defensive coordinator.
11:23That's going to get the most out of him as well.
11:26We're seeing that impact with the way that the secondary today was able to force three turnovers,
11:33two interceptions, and a forced fumble.
11:35Well, you remember Harbaugh all along, and this has been his mantra.
11:38He wants guys who love football, and he wants guys who will play the game with an enthusiasm unknown to
11:46mankind.
11:47There we go.
11:48And maybe Taye Banks has gotten the message.
11:53For his sake, he better.
11:55Yeah, and just to go back to Denard Wilson because, I mean, it's all full circle
12:00because it goes back to the introductory press conference when John Harbaugh said he was going to bring in the
12:05best coaches.
12:06You see he's been able to kind of do that on the offensive side of the football.
12:10But Denard Wilson, with that secondary background, has been able to come in,
12:14and this secondary has looked ten times better, I feel as though, than springs in the past.
12:23Paulson Adibo looks healthy, looks like he's lost a little weight, ran that thing down,
12:29a deep ball from Jackson Dart to Darnell Mooney.
12:32I don't know if he was beat or he was coming over to help late,
12:34but he ran it down and showed really good hands catching the football.
12:39Corey Black jumped a crossing route across the middle, got another interception,
12:43and then Odell has this famous Odell slant.
12:46Stripped by Rico Payton.
12:49Now, there's an undrafted guy getting in on the action.
12:52You saw a pass breakup against Isaiah Likely on the sideline.
12:57I forget who it was, but then you saw every DB come over,
13:00which I absolutely hate as a former receiver.
13:03See belts, strap.
13:05You see how enthusiastic guys like Javon Holland is.
13:08You see guys like Paulson Adibo, who you paid a lot of money to a year ago in free agency.
13:13You see him now making a play.
13:16I don't think he had an interception throughout any camp last year.
13:20Harbaugh will demand more from Paulson Adibo and Javon Holland,
13:23two of the high-priced free agents a year ago.
13:28Oh, Odell hasn't invited me to Fort Charles yet.
13:31You know about that?
13:32Where's Fort Charles?
13:33Fort Charles in Manhattan, the best restaurant, one of the best in Manhattan.
13:37He took the wide receivers there.
13:39You weren't part of that package, right?
13:40No, not that one.
13:41You know, as long as he picked up the bill.
13:43If he picked up the bill, I'm a little upset that I didn't get that invite.
13:48Of all people not to invite, Brandon London?
13:51Odell has gotten me into some parties before, so I'm not worried about a little dinner.
13:55But, I mean, that just goes to show what type of Odell we're going to see this year.
14:00Like, you could be, oh, Odell 2.0, 3.0.
14:03No, Odell the dad.
14:05Odell has always been popular with his teammates.
14:07Yes, for sure.
14:08He used to take players out, teammates out, Sterling Shepard, et cetera, to dinners and hosted them at his home.
14:16Absolutely.
14:17So that's nothing new for Odell.
14:18Yep.
14:19So, I mean, he's easy to root for.
14:21I'm rooting for Odell.
14:22Without a doubt.
14:23Without a doubt.
14:24Had a nice catch, again, a nice catch today.
14:26And you see, when it comes to that wide receiver room, it's like they gave the young guys a couple
14:32of weeks to get, to show that you know how to pick up an NFL playbook and be in certain
14:38spots.
14:39Because when they went and got Braxton Berrios, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Odell, these are all guys that I don't
14:45need to teach you how to come back to the ball on a curl route.
14:48I don't need to tell you where you need to be on the basic route against cover two and you're
14:54running it behind the linebackers.
14:55These are guys that if I'm Matt Nagy, all I have to say to you is, hey, you know how
15:00you guys ran it out in Cleveland?
15:01Juju, you remember how Andy had us run it out in Kansas City?
15:05These are guys that have already done it.
15:08They've done it multiple times.
15:09And all we have to do is get you picked up to speed on the lingo, not where you need
15:14to be.
15:14Because part of being a great receiver is just being in your spot.
15:18These are guys who know how to get to their spot.
15:20And you can see.
15:21Berrios was a very good signing.
15:23A veteran guy who knows how to be a returner.
15:26Yes.
15:26Much needed, of course, after Gunner's injury.
15:32But the latest in a number of shrewd moves that Harbaugh and Joe Shane have made.
15:38Shows that they're all in right now.
15:40Oh, absolutely.
15:41Absolutely all in right now.
15:42They're sick of losing around here.
15:44Yeah, yeah.
15:44And now with the Knicks doing what they're doing, the Knicks are showing the Giants what this city can be
15:52like
15:52when you win.
15:53No better place to win than New York.
15:56And by the way, you didn't mention Sean McDermott was here today.
16:02Sean McDermott was here.
16:03And former UMass star Brandon London was also at practice today.
16:08I'm at every practice.
16:09I'm at every practice.
16:10Why is it such a big deal today?
16:12I'm at every practice.
16:13Well, I mean, you deserve to be included with that group.
16:17Sean McDermott used to coach with my father, Mike London, at William & Mary.
16:20Back in the day, I saw him today.
16:22Got a chance to talk with him.
16:24I don't know if you remember me when I was a young ball boy running around.
16:27You're hard to forget.
16:27You're hard to forget.
16:28Yeah.
16:29But it was good to see him.
16:30Obviously, Tremaine Edmonds talked about them being really close, not only on the field, but off the field.
16:36So, you know, you see Joe Shane, you see John Harbaugh bringing in, again, more eyes.
16:40And it was good to see John Mara at practice today, too.
16:43Yep, yep, yep.
16:44So, I mean, it's just, you experience this as a Giants fan.
16:49It's like a cycle.
16:50You get excited in the spring, and then for some reason it all falls apart in the fall.
16:57Tell me why it feels different this year.
16:59John Harbaugh.
17:00John Harbaugh.
17:01The $20 million man.
17:03There you go.
17:03That's why it feels different.
17:05The most prestigious, important hire the Giants have made, maybe ever.
17:13Yeah.
17:13Maybe ever.
17:14Tom Coughlin had not won a Super Bowl when the Giants hired him, correct?
17:20Yeah.
17:20In 2004.
17:21No.
17:22Bill Parcells had not won a Super Bowl when the Giants hired him.
17:27Well, John Harbaugh has.
17:29Yeah.
17:30And I don't think he's forgotten how to win one.
17:32He came close.
17:33He's come close a number of times since.
17:34But the way the players respond to him, it's very eye-opening.
17:41Eye-opening for me to watch and eye-opening for them to be part of.
17:46And by the way, Brian Burns, I spoke to him briefly.
17:49You know what his goal this season is?
17:5118 and a half.
17:53Every year, he says it's 20.
17:5520 sacks.
17:58Why not?
17:59He almost did it last year, right?
18:0016 and a half?
18:01Why not?
18:02And if you have a secondary that's pressing, getting in guys' faces, those quick pressures,
18:08instead of getting a quick pressure, that might turn into an extra sack.
18:11And everybody's raving about Arvel Reese.
18:13Yes.
18:14The kid looks as advertised.
18:16I mean, I can't wait to see the pads get put on.
18:18He can cover in space.
18:20The way that he closes on a lot of the plays, you can already see him.
18:24I mean, Tremaine Edmonds talked about him being a hard worker.
18:27Saturday respects him because he wants to come in and show guys.
18:30You know, when I was a kid, I used to tell my dad, I'm going to the NFL.
18:33He used to always say, I'm like Missouri, the show me state.
18:37He wanted to see the work being put in when it comes to that.
18:41And that seems to be the approach that a kid like Arvel Reese has come in.
18:45And I'll end it on this because like Tremaine Edmonds had said,
18:49they got them paired up together.
18:50You know, he's helping him out, loves playing next to him.
18:53But he said he just wants Arvel Reese to know and understand
18:56there's 10 other guys out there that's got your bat.
19:00You're not out there all by yourself.
19:03So the vibes are high.
19:04And Isaiah Likely today also reiterated what John Harbaugh has said,
19:11calling the tight end room the best in the league.
19:14Now that remains to be seen.
19:16Show me.
19:17Exactly.
19:18Show me.
19:18Isaiah Likely has been impressed with Theo Johnson also
19:21and how big Theo Johnson is.
19:24So a lot to be – look, it's June, right?
19:27Yeah, June.
19:28Giants are 0-0.
19:29John Harbaugh hasn't lost the game.
19:31But I think there's – that division's wide open.
19:35Wide open.
19:36You agree?
19:37Without a doubt.
19:38I mean, anything can happen.
19:39I'm not – see, and that's why when we get – I know we were supposed to end this,
19:43but we're having a really good conversation here.
19:45That's why when we do the predictions, you get the roster,
19:48what type of prediction, anything can happen.
19:50I can't circle them winning a game in November and it's May or June.
19:55Who knows what's going to happen.
19:57Anything can happen on any given Sunday.
20:00So –
20:00The Panthers were in the playoffs last year.
20:02Remember the Bengals were in the Super Bowl years ago, lost to the Rams?
20:06Lost to the Rams.
20:06Nobody picked them, right?
20:08At all.
20:08At all.
20:09So every year there's that dark horse team.
20:12And for you to be that dark horse, one, you have to have the groceries.
20:15Two, you have to have a $20 million chef or cook.
20:20Yep.
20:20And that is John Harbaugh.
20:21And I don't believe he has too many cooks in the kitchen because these are quality cooks
20:27and he's the one that's going to ultimately sign off on the meal.
20:30Absolutely.
20:31And by the way, I want to congratulate you for having Jeremy Shockey on with you.
20:36That was great.
20:37That's my guy.
