00:28Let's get started.
17:51I don't know.
17:53Look at you.
17:54I'm sitting there.
17:55You're smiling.
18:25You know, he brings you.
18:56You saw Pepe in the Senegal game bringing Christian into the play
19:01and being able to lay balls off and then addition his own assist in that way.
19:05So they all bring different challenges,
19:09and I think as defenders you want to see those, for us anyway in training,
19:14you want to be able to play against different types of strikers,
19:17and they all bring a little bit of something different.
19:20Front row, Jonathan.
19:21Thanks, Michael.
19:22Good morning, guys.
19:22Jonathan Tannenbaum from the Philadelphia Inquirer.
19:24Flo, one for you.
19:25Yes.
19:25Finally.
19:27To think about back at the time when you committed to the U.S. program,
19:31all the recruiting spectacle and all the hopes and expectations that there were for fans,
19:36for players, for you as well, I'm sure,
19:39to have now reached this big moment of this World Cup,
19:42what does it mean to you now to be here and at the gateway to the big stage?
19:48Yeah, you know, I think I'm extremely proud.
19:51I feel like, you know, my individual journey is a bit full circle.
19:55Now, you know, approaching the World Cup, you know, especially with the World Cup being here,
20:00you know, the opportunity to represent my nation, you know, in front of a home crowd is going to be
20:04something special for me,
20:06for my family, for my friends, and, you know, for the team.
20:09So I'm definitely looking forward to it.
20:10I'm very proud.
20:12Third row to your left.
20:14Kevin Baxter from the L.A. Times.
20:15Tim, Tim, over here, I know this isn't your first rodeo,
20:20but, I mean, from the time both you guys were small enough to kick a ball the first time,
20:24you've been dreaming about the World Cup, and it's here now, you know, a couple days away.
20:30What's going through your mind and what maybe that you didn't do last time
20:33or you're trying to do this time to sort of enjoy it and drink it all in
20:36and make sure you get the experience?
20:37And then at the same time, what would you tell the young kids to do?
20:43I mean, you say it's not our first rodeo, but it's our first one on home soil,
20:47so it kind of is our first rodeo.
20:50In a way, it's exciting.
20:52It's not – again, I was – I'm old enough that I remember bits and pieces of 1994.
21:01So, you know, I've tried to tell guys and, you know, tried to convey the message in the media
21:08that this is a once-in-a-career opportunity, and with that comes, you know, more expectation,
21:16more pressure, but at the same time, we have to enjoy it.
21:20You know, there's nobody putting more expectation and more pressure on us than ourselves,
21:25and that's the way that it should be.
21:28You know, and for me, it's about just opening your eyes and taking everything in
21:35because this is unique.
21:37This is different.
21:38This is, you know, completely different from anything that any of us as players has experienced.
21:43So take it in, enjoy it, embrace everything that it is because it is – it's so unique.
21:50It's so special, and it's not something that we'll ever get to do again.
21:54There, Bill.
21:54Hi, Tim.
21:55Tom Boger from The Athletic over here.
21:58The last time you guys played Paraguay, the game ended really physically with the fight,
22:02the fracas, whatever you want to call it, two parts to that.
22:05One, did that serve as any, like, spark for the group to show everybody that everybody's
22:10got each other's backs, and what are you expecting on the physical side of things against Paraguay
22:15to open the World Cup?
22:16No, I think the spark actually started in Gold Cup, to be completely honest with you.
22:21You know, there were a few get-togethers in those games as well.
22:26So, you know, I think the Paraguay game, as you mentioned at the end, there was, you know,
22:33there was a little bit extra.
22:35It had the feel of the game meant something more.
22:40And now you look at it and you think, okay, that's – it was a perfect test for us in
22:45that moment.
22:46So, you know, it's good that, you know, we've had that experience, but, you know,
22:51you come to this point, it's a World Cup and it doesn't – that game, yes,
22:56there are things you can glean from it and learn, but it's kind of in the rearview mirror.
23:02You know, you can't really sit there and think, okay, yeah, it was a – you know, it's perfect.
23:07We know what to expect.
23:08It's going to be this way.
23:09It's going to be that way.
23:10And it's not because it's a World Cup.
23:12It's – everything's clean.
23:14Everything's new.
23:14Everything's, you know, you start from scratch.
23:17So we have to be prepared for everything, but it's – as you said, it was a good – I
23:23think for the guys
23:24that were in that camp and a part of that, you know, a part of that moment, I think,
23:31was a good – you know, a good learning experience and, you know, good coming together for the group
23:35that was there.
23:38There, Bill.
23:40Tim, Mark Ziegler, San Diego, Union Tribune.
23:42And you mentioned you, old enough to remember 1994, so you've seen this explosion of the
23:48sport in this country in terms of youth development, in terms of MLS, et cetera, et cetera.
23:53Yet the national team hasn't really advanced, you know, much to one quarterfinal, but a lot
23:59of round of – second rounds, some group eliminations.
24:03Why do you think it is that the national team hasn't been able to progress deep into the tournament?
24:08And what does it say about this sport, that you can have all the money and resources,
24:11yet, you know, a country like Uruguay or a small country like Belgium can succeed?
24:18I don't have answers to that.
24:22I haven't gone into a deep analysis and looked at all the reasons.
24:29Fortunately, I'm on the playing side and, you know, fully focused on playing and being
24:33a part of, you know, being a part of, you know, a program for, you know, for the last
24:3816 years and, you know, just contributing on the playing side.
24:43I think, you know, there's any number of things that I think people can look at and analyze,
24:47but, you know, for me, because I'm still playing, I haven't.
24:52But, you know, it is something that I'm sure people are trying to understand.
24:58But I think at the same time, you look at, as you said, the explosion on the youth level
25:03and how many kids are gravitating towards the sport and wanting to play the game.
25:08I think it bodes well for the future, obviously.
25:10But, yeah, I don't have an answer for your question, unfortunately.
25:16Second round.
25:18Ryan Tolentz from Goal.
25:19This one's for Balow.
25:20So, as a striker and as a soccer player in general, you always kind of have to look at
25:24the next game.
25:25You know, you can never really get too carried away.
25:26You can never look too far ahead.
25:28But we get to a point now where the next game is the World Cup.
25:32You know, for you, what is that like?
25:34And when does the fact that that is the next game kind of start to feel real to you as
25:39someone who hasn't gotten to do this before?
25:42Yeah, I think, you know, it's probably going to start to feel more real to me when I'm
25:46lining up and, you know, preparing to go out onto the pitch.
25:48You know, and I'm hearing the fans shouting and, you know, screaming.
25:52So, I definitely think it will be real to me, you know, the closer I get.
25:57But, you know, this is the first opportunity for me to play in the World Cup, you know.
26:00So, I don't really have any expectations, you know.
26:03And I'm just trying to stay present, stay in the moment, soak everything in, you know.
26:07And I'm enjoying the experience so far.
26:10And, you know, I hope it can be a really memorable one.
26:14Fifth row, all in the back.
26:15Hey, Jeff Ritter with the Guardian Flow, another one for you.
26:18They've been working through a lot with the possession sequences in this camp, especially
26:22now that the roster is settled.
26:24And how have you found the ability to get service from the central channel rather than,
26:28you know, which has so far over the last two friendlies mostly come up the left wing?
26:34Yeah, I think, you know, every game is different.
26:36I think in the game against Senegal, you know, I had a good amount of opportunities.
26:40You know, I felt involved in a short amount of time.
26:43And, you know, as a striker, that's what you want to do.
26:46You know, that's how you want to feel.
26:48You know, the game against Germany was a bit more difficult.
26:50You know, of course, there are better oppositions.
26:52So, you know, that's to be expected.
26:53But, you know, I'm just trying to go into these games.
26:56You know, every game is going to be a completely new game.
26:59Every game is going to be a fight.
27:00You know, you're going to need to be hungry, stay focused.
27:02And, you know, I have faith in, you know, my teammates myself that we can definitely create opportunities
27:07and I can finish them off.
27:09In the back?
27:11Sorry, in the back of the middle.
27:13Hi, gentlemen.
27:13Kyle Kraska with Fox Los Angeles.
27:15Welcome here to Irvine.
27:17I want to ask you about this facility, if I may.
27:19People have been preparing for your arrival for a really long time.
27:23This, for decades, was a Marine Corps air station built for high-stakes preparation.
27:29I know you both just arrived.
27:31Could you please both comment, though, on what you think of this facility where you'll call home for the next
27:35several weeks
27:36and how important is this facility for your preparation?
27:41Yeah, obviously driving in.
27:44You know, we're super impressive.
27:47You know, we get to train in an actual stadium with a good pitch.
27:54You know, the support that we just pulled up, too, with all the kids out there is amazing.
27:59But, listen, you want to feel like you have a good home base, right?
28:04You have a place that you can not have to worry about all the little details off the field.
28:11Everything's been taken care of for us.
28:13We're very, very much spoiled in that way as players.
28:17And that allows us to focus on everything that we need to, whether it be in the gym or on
28:23the field.
28:23So, really looking forward to being here over the next, what, three weeks.
28:28And, you know, I think the guys are excited to get going.
28:32And, you know, I had a – I think Flo just got on the golf cart and rode over here.
28:38But I was able to step inside really quick.
28:40And, yeah, everything's top notch.
28:44And, you know, like I said, we're all looking forward to being here and getting settled in
28:47and really getting to work and making sure that we're ready for the first game.
28:53Bart Rowe.
28:54To the left.
28:55Yeah.
28:55Damian Calhoun, Orange County Register.
28:57Question for Flo.
28:59You take us back to those early recruitment days for the U.S. soccer
29:02when the fans were tracking your every moment there in Florida there.
29:06What do you remember about those days there?
29:09Yeah, you know, I just remember, you know, just immense amount of, you know,
29:14appreciation from the fans, you know.
29:17I didn't realize at that moment, you know, how big, you know, football soccer was out here in America.
29:22And, you know, to really feel that in full force was something that was inspirational for me.
29:27You know, it made my decision easier.
29:28And, you know, as I said before, you know, it's just coming to a full circle moment,
29:33being able to, you know, perform on the biggest stage and give back to the fans.
29:36You know, that's something I'm looking forward to do.
29:38And, yeah, you know, I'm just happy I have the opportunity to be able to do that.
29:44Thank you, Tim.
29:45Thank you, Balo.
29:46We'll be right back with Ricardo and Matt.
30:17We'll be right back with Ricardo and Matt.
32:09Hey, we're joined by goalkeeper Matt Fries and striker Ricardo Pepe.
32:15We'll begin second row in the middle.
32:23Thanks, Michael.
32:24Sanjay with Backfield and the Scuffed Podcast.
32:27This question is for both of you.
32:28There's going to be tens of millions of people in this country just getting up to speed with what this
32:34team has done, this cycle, what this team's about.
32:36What's your message to the fans that are jumping on right now about why they should believe in this team
32:40and get excited about this tournament?
32:44I would say the message for me is believe.
32:49You know, we're believing.
32:51And when you have a group of guys that fights for each other and dies for each other on the
32:56field, anything can happen.
32:59So believe in us, bring the energy, and we hear each and every one of you.
33:06Go on, go on, go on, go on.
33:09Yeah, I do.
33:09I agree, I agree.
33:11Third row to your right.
33:13Hey, Matt, Sean Gregory from Time.
33:17You've talked about in the past when you first turned pro, you were so focused on your professional career that,
33:24you know, you didn't know how to balance yourself.
33:26And then once classes resumed at Harvard, you were able to compartmentalize and you've called it help revive your career.
33:33Can you just explain a little more detail why going, you know, going back to school in a way helped
33:38you become a better soccer player?
33:40Yeah, well, I think when you're a professional athlete at age 18, 19, sometimes it can be difficult to, you
33:51know, keep a routine, keep a regimen that, you know, keeps you focused and keeps you hungry.
33:58And for me, you know, taking classes was something that occupied my time, occupied my mind, and gave a very,
34:07you know, natural release off the field that I think at that age was necessary.
34:13It's different now.
34:14You know, I'm 27.
34:15I've been a pro for eight, nine years.
34:17It's quite different now, and I know how to handle it.
34:19But, you know, at that point in my life, it was incredibly important.
34:24Same place.
34:25Third row.
34:26Hey, Matt, Henry Bush down from The Athletic.
34:28I've got a two-part question.
34:29The first one's very quick.
34:30Have you been told whether or not you're starting on Friday?
34:34No, just, you know, focused on today.
34:36Training today, we have 5,500, is that right?
34:405,500 fans lighten this place up.
34:44So I'm pumped for training today.
34:46And then just, you know, the U.S. has a long history of excellent goalkeeping at World Cups,
34:50whereas I think there are some people, you know, questioning whether that will be the case this year
34:55and, frankly, questioning you.
34:56I'm curious whether you hear that and how you take it.
35:00Yeah, I don't hear it.
35:02You know, not really listening to anyone outside of the guys with me and the coaching staff, obviously.
35:12And, you know, focused on just doing my thing each and every day, being present.
35:18And, you know, with that in mind, it is fair to say the U.S. has a great goalkeeping core
35:27historically.
35:28You know, I was a fan of that goalkeeping core for much of my life, still am.
35:33And so, you know, it's an honor to be on this team and be part of that group to hopefully
35:40continue that great legacy.
35:44Primera fila, a derecha.
35:47Bernardo Zuna, ESPN.
37:54este torneo.
37:58Portho, in the middle.
38:01Hey, Matt, Jake Gariani from CBS 8 in San Diego.
38:04I know Friday you'll be locked in on the game, but on a day like today where there's a bunch
38:07of kids and American fans out there,
38:09I'm curious to know what you think a deep run in a World Cup can do for future generations,
38:14and how much is that important to you?
38:17Yeah, I mean, it means so much to be able to be in a position to inspire, you know, the
38:26next generation,
38:27and there's a compounding effect to it, obviously.
38:29You know, we were inspired by the previous generation.
38:32Hopefully we inspire the next generation, and the more we inspire them, the better the following generation will be.
38:37So, you know, to be in a position to train in front of these people today and, you know,
38:43hopefully play on Friday in front of, you know, all the fans and inspire them is such a unique opportunity
38:50and one that none of us take for granted.
38:54You know, we're working as hard as we can, as focused as we can, you know,
39:00to continue to, you know, leave the next generation inspired.
39:06First row on your left.
39:08Hey, Matt, Steve Goff from Yahoo Sports.
39:10You've talked about your preparation and your consistency before games and all.
39:17Being a World Cup game, have you envisioned this over the years,
39:23this moment of stepping onto a World Cup field, particularly at home,
39:28and what that challenge is like for you mentally and physically?
39:34Sorry, could you say that again? I missed a little bit.
39:37Just what your, whether you envisioned this moment where you had the opportunity, perhaps,
39:45to start in a World Cup.
39:47Yeah, I mean, I, you dream of this opportunity, you work for the opportunity,
39:52but you never know if it's going to come.
39:55And, you know, I, I, I learned, yeah, probably nine years ago,
40:04the ones that work hard without the promise of reward are the ones that usually succeed.
40:15Second row to your right.
40:17Hey, Matt, here.
40:18You train, or you see Rico in training every single day and the other strikers too.
40:23How are, what are his strengths and how are they different from the other strikers on the roster,
40:27Balo and Ajirite?
40:29I mean, all three of them are pretty good at scoring goals, I would say.
40:35So, you know, I see that every single day in, in, in training.
40:39You know, obviously there's, you know, myriad strengths and, and, and characteristics of,
40:44of each player and, you know, Pepe obviously had a, had a, you know, huge, huge role in the,
40:52in the game in Charlotte.
40:53Did a, did a fantastic job setting up some, some different things.
40:57And, you know, I, I think the entire, you know, attacking group, strikers, wingers, you know,
41:06tens, et cetera, have done a great job these last two friendlies of, of creating chances
41:11and being, being fluid and, you know.
41:15Second row to your left.
41:16Attacking.
41:18Sorry, did I interrupt you?
41:19It's all good.
41:21My bad.
41:22No, I had one word left.
41:23I had one word left.
41:24You're good.
41:26My bad.
41:27I'm joking.
41:29Hi guys.
41:30Jake Yovine for Cronkite News, Arizona PBS.
41:33This upcoming game against Paraguay will be on Friday evening primetime game.
41:40Big Fox.
41:40So a lot of eyeballs will be on this opening game.
41:43How much pressure do you guys feel for that moment?
41:46And with all these eyes coming on for this game?
41:51Yeah, I think, you know, at the end of the day, we see this as a fantastic opportunity
41:55to be able to play in front of our country, in front of our people and, you know, represent
41:58each other, represent our family.
42:00So, you know, just a little bit of the pressure aside.
42:02I feel like we see it more as an opportunity to be able to represent our country.
42:08A hundred percent agree.
42:09And, you know, obviously bigger stakes in a tournament like this and incredible opportunities
42:17and, you know, pressure makes diamonds.
42:20And I think we're a bunch of, you know, 26, a group of 26 guys that wants to show that
42:26we're a bunch of diamonds.
42:29Sorry, just making sure.
42:32I'm done.
42:32Secondary.
42:34Yeah, MichaelLewisForbes.com.
42:36This is for Matt.
42:37I know we all have egos, but what makes you think that Mauricio will pick you for that
42:42World Cup opener?
42:46Yeah, I mean, as a competitor, you always want to be on the field, always want to help
42:52your team in whatever capacity.
42:54And this doesn't change in this moment.
42:57You know, whatever I'm called upon to do, I'm ready to do.
43:01You know, I drive a lot of my confidence from the hard work that I've put in.
43:07And I've worked quite hard.
43:10And so, you know, I know now is a time to be confident and remember all the work that's
43:17been put in.
43:19So training's been in 10 minutes.
43:21So thank you, Matt.
43:22Thank you, Rico.
43:23See you outside.
