00:00We can report for you officially at this hour that the San Francisco Giants have yet again been swept by
00:07the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second time in nine days.
00:12The Giants have been swept by the Diamondbacks final today from Oracle Park 3-2, a game the Giants led
00:192-0 for a long time,
00:21then fell down in the late innings by a score of 3-2.
00:26But what you really need to focus on and know about is what took place in the bottom of the
00:30eighth.
00:31Willie Adamas was gifted another one of these Sun fly ball doubles that actually hit the left fielder in the
00:39chest.
00:40Right in the heart.
00:42Right between the eyes.
00:44Somehow not an error because even though you touched it.
00:47I don't know.
00:48Anyway.
00:49I think errors have now sort of become like does the official scorekeeper feel bad for you?
00:55And he's like, oh, I lost it in the Sun.
00:57So, anyway, it's a double.
00:59He is tied for the league lead in doubles.
01:02And so we've got that going for us.
01:04But Willie's at second base with one out.
01:07Luis Arise puts a base hit into left center field.
01:11Willie had to hold up to see if it was caught.
01:13It was not.
01:15He then takes off.
01:16As I'm watching it live, I'm thinking, well, that's a bummer that he had to hold up.
01:21But first and third one out.
01:24And here comes Casey Schmidt to the plate.
01:26That's what's going through my head.
01:28And then I look up at the screen.
01:30And here comes Willie flying around third base heading for home plate when there was no way in hell he
01:37was going to beat the ball there.
01:38And surprise, surprise, he didn't.
01:42He's out at home plate.
01:44But, hey, Arise gets over to second base.
01:47So he's still in scoring position for Casey Schmidt.
01:49Whoops.
01:50He gets picked off a couple of pitches later, hitting over.
01:54Wow.
01:54Yeah.
01:55And for those of you wondering, is Hector Borg back?
01:59That's what I've asked you.
02:01Is Hector Borg back?
02:02He had traveled after, I think, a death in the family.
02:06Yep.
02:07A grandparent.
02:08And so, yes, he's back.
02:11Are you just guessing based on what actually took place?
02:14No, no, no.
02:14No, he's over at third.
02:15I actually saw him earlier.
02:18And, yes, he sent Willie when he had no business sending Willie.
02:26Giants lose three to two, 12 under 500.
02:30Yeah, there you go.
02:31And I suppose you could blame him for Arise getting picked off second.
02:35I think that's probably unfair.
02:36But just another one of those sends where you send a guy and he was out by about, he would
02:42have been out by 10 feet.
02:43But the throw was a little offline.
02:44The catcher kind of had to wrangle it.
02:46He still had time to collect it and turn and apply the tag.
02:52And, yeah, Willie was out by a good three feet.
02:54And Vitello looks at his team like, should we?
02:57Should we?
02:58And they're like, no, Tony.
02:59No, don't challenge.
03:00No.
03:01He was out.
03:01Not close.
03:02And then Arise gets picked off.
03:04So, bang, bang, just back to back, head scratching plays on the bases where you got a break on that
03:11high fly ball to left.
03:13It was a pretty routine play, except you're looking right up in the sun.
03:16And, you know, 99 times out of 100, that's an out.
03:19But it wasn't.
03:20So, there's your break.
03:21Go ahead and take advantage of your break and win the game.
03:24And then you get a hit from Arise.
03:26Yep.
03:27And like you said, if you throw up the stop sign, it's first and third with one out.
03:30And the best hitter on your team is up.
03:32I want to give people a little bit of a visual here because we're watching the highlight again right now.
03:36That ball is being retrieved by the left fielder and has been thrown toward the infield prior to Willie Adamas
03:46hitting third base.
03:47This is from medium deep left field.
03:50The ball is traveling to the infield before Willie gets to third.
03:56And they sent him.
03:58I promised you something before.
04:00You promised you'd be authentic.
04:03Well, we are that.
04:04Well, I promised you something.
04:05Actually, let me say it differently.
04:07I've promised myself something in my career.
04:09I don't like using these microphones to call for people's jobs.
04:16I think it's bad juju.
04:19We can criticize, but I don't like using these microphones to talk about firings.
04:28I just think it's kind of bad juice.
04:31We're all in tough industries and blah, blah, blah.
04:34I don't need to go too far into that.
04:36But.
04:41But you want him out.
04:42He can't be the third base coach anymore.
04:44He cannot be that guy.
04:45He cannot.
04:46Like, again, just move him somewhere else.
04:48His left arm, he goes really fast with that go, go, go send.
04:52Yeah.
04:52When you watch the replay, he's got to stretch before the game.
04:55I've never in my life of watching baseball thought more about the third base coach.
05:01Like, there's always a few plays every year where you're like, oof, that was a tough one.
05:06That's hard.
05:06I get it.
05:08Tim Flannery did that interview last week, and he talked about how hard nobody wants to be the third base
05:13coach.
05:14Because you're the last line of defense before scoring runs.
05:16And so, it's a hot seat position.
05:19We are only 56 games into this season, and we already have a solid 5, 6, 7 experiences that are
05:28completely and totally inexcusable.
05:33Totally inexcusable.
05:34I have no clue what is going on over there.
05:39But he needs to be reassigned within the staff and put Ron Wotus back out there.
05:44Does he have options?
05:45I mean, can he be sent down to go be third base coach in AAA?
05:48We can't do this anymore.
05:49I'm so, like, I hate it.
05:51I'm sorry.
05:52I've not even met Hector.
05:54I don't, like, I don't know, other than sending people or not, what the expertise of being the third base
06:00coach even is.
06:02I know in Little League, that's the sign guy.
06:04I don't even think that's what's going on anymore.
06:07People have got wires in their helmets, and things are being whispered to them all over the field.
06:11I don't know what the hell that job is at this point other than send or don't send, but he's
06:17not good at it.
06:19So, my apologies for the energy behind this, but this has got to be addressed.
06:28This is not working, and it has been one egregious mistake after another.
06:35You mess up once, twice, three times, I get it.
06:38It's tough.
06:39This is like we're pushing seven or eight here, and we're only 56 games in.
06:43And sometimes it's you hold a guy that you should have sent, and now it's a send when you should
06:48have held him.
06:48And you're right.
06:49By the time the third baseman collects the ball, he is right about third base, and the cutoff man is
06:55just standing there like, right here.
06:57And it's boom, boom, two throws even.
06:59It wasn't even a one throw.
07:01Oh, great throw.
07:02You know, got him by a foot.
07:03It had to go through the cutoff man, and he still was going to be out by 10 feet or
07:07more.
07:07And Borg is halfway down the line and just waving that arm, and here comes Willie.
07:13And especially when you consider the bad jump he got, and he had to because he wasn't sure if he'd
07:18be caught or not,
07:19and so he wasn't even at full speed coming around third.
07:22Gibbs!
07:24Casey Schmidt is on deck!
07:26Right?
07:26That ball might have gotten Schmidt on with first and third.
07:30You know, you double right there, you score them both, and next thing you know, you got a 4-3
07:35lead.
07:36And we get to all find out who's going to be the closer today, because they weren't in need of
07:40a closer, as it turned out, because they were trailing.
07:44I was saying this to you during the break.
07:46I give them credit for at least finding new ways to lose.
07:49Like, they're mixing it up, right?
07:51Well, the problem is, actually, no, they're not finding new ways to lose.
07:55It is often the same thing.
07:56No, this was a two-piece, though, because Adamas gets thrown out at home, and then a rise gets picked
08:01off a second.
08:02Right, but a runner in second with two outs is not a run I'm expecting to get.
08:05But a runner at third with one with your best hitter at the plate is a run I'm expecting to
08:09get.
08:10That's a better-than-50-50 proposition, I feel, in this moment.
08:13Well, even a runner at second with two outs and Casey Schmidt up, I still like your chances.
08:18I mean, you got a shot, yeah.
08:20It's a less-than-50-50 chance, but...
08:22But the Adamas one is the worse error in this inning than what a rise did.
08:27They're both errors, and the a rise thing is on a rise.
08:30That's not on Hector Borg.
08:32But I said this a few weeks ago in Philly, and I'll say it again, the third-base coach is
08:38no different than a left guard in football.
08:40I do not want to know his name.
08:42I don't want to talk about it.
08:44If we're talking about it, there's a problem.
08:46And we have all, we've watched our listeners immediately, after some of these games, start talking about Hector Borg.
08:54He's a brand-new third-base coach.
08:56Most Giants fans should not even know his name yet.
08:59But everybody does, and there's a reason for that.
09:02And so, I don't know yet.
09:04We haven't learned enough yet to know all the things that Hector is bringing to this coaching staff.
09:09And so, I am completely open-minded to that, but there needs to be a restructure here.
09:15Because what he's doing over at third base is, quite frankly, right now, it's a disservice to the players.
09:22This team is not good enough to have mistakes like this keep happening.
09:28And you just said it.
09:29When guys should be going, they're staying.
09:31And when they should be staying, they're going.
09:32And, like, it's just not, it's not working.
09:36It's not working.
09:37And when things are not working repeatedly, you have to make adjustments.
09:42Or else you're just banging your head against the wall.
09:45And, like, to me, we have clearly arrived there.
09:48This is from Tim Kawakami's Twitter feed.
09:51I've noticed Hector Borg's non-great decisions as third-base coach.
09:55Got to note, that was a good aggressive send of Adamas to the plate.
09:58Also, a horrendous throw from center field.
10:00But I assume Borg was anticipating that.
10:03That's from two hours ago.
10:05That's from the first time Adamas scored.
10:07That was when Adamas belly flopped at home plate.
10:10Correct.
10:11For the second run.
10:12They scored twice in the plate.
10:13I just was thinking, because I googled Hector Borg.
10:15Thank goodness you told me that was the first one.
10:17That was the payoff.
10:18Jeez.
10:18That was the whole payoff to the bit.
10:19Well played.
10:20Because, you know, Hector Borg, not good decisions at third.
10:24This one was a good one.
10:26And Tim even kind of points out, like, it was a horrendous throw from center.
10:29But I assume Borg was anticipating that.
10:31Well, and that's Tim.
10:32Tongue in cheek.
10:33Right.
10:33But you're looking for a compliment of somebody who is beleaguered in his position.
10:40You know what I mean?
10:41Like, if Tyler Malley had thrown well last night, you'd point it out.
10:45You'd be like, ah, I know that the year's not been good, but that was a good start.
10:49So that's kind of what Tim's doing there.
10:51And then Tim tweeted over the top of his own tweet 24 minutes ago and said,
10:55and this one was way too aggressive.
10:58All caps.
10:59This might have been, other than the extra innings non-send in Philly, this one was the worst.
11:07Like I said, you are the third base coach, and this ball's in left field.
11:12You don't even need to try on this one.
11:14You come down the line, and I can see the ball, and I can see my runner.
11:19And the ball is on its way to the infield, and Willie Adamas is still three steps away from third
11:26base.
11:27That is a no-brainer hold.
11:30Yeah.
11:30He was probably at third, but to your point, he wasn't.
11:34I mean, I was watching it, and again, it's not.
11:36He wasn't there yet.
11:37It doesn't even matter, like, where he was relative to third.
11:40It's a no-brainer hold.
11:41And I was thinking about back in the day before the DH where maybe the pitcher was up next,
11:47and, oh, boy, we've got to be aggressive because the pitcher's coming up.
11:50You had Casey, that ball got Schmidt on, an OPS of almost 900, hottest hitter on your team.
11:56He's ready with ducks on the pond.
11:58Fly ball ties it.
12:00Wild pitch ties it.
12:02Safety squeeze ties it.
12:04A lot of things ties it.
12:05Sending him when he's got little chance doesn't ties it.
12:09Well, do you remember when he was interviewed after the Philly hold?
12:13Okay?
12:13Extra inning baseball game.
12:15The third base coach was interviewed?
12:17Absolutely, because they wanted to know why the player was held, and it was a bad hold,
12:22and we didn't like the answer because remember what Hector pointed to?
12:26He said, I liked who we had coming up in the on-deck circle.
12:29Good point.
12:31How about now, dude?
12:33First and third one out with the best player on your team coming up.
12:41I, yeah, I feel terrible, but you can't, we can't do this anymore.
12:45It's trigger day.
12:47Yeah.
12:47You got to, you got to, you got to make a move.
12:49You got to make a move.
12:50I mean, I just put Wotus right back.
12:52Wotus did the whole week.
12:53He did the whole week.
12:54He did the weekend when the Giants were scoring buckets.
12:58Now, I'm not going to give him credit for that.
12:59It's easy to send a guy home when it's a grand slam.
13:02Okay, so, but, like, you have other options there, and this is just, he's just not seeing it.
13:10He's not seeing it.
13:12And so, it's, you got to, you got to change this up.
13:15Like, he can stay on the staff, just switch roles with a couple people.
13:19I don't know.
13:20I've never even met Hector.
13:21But, like, you can't, you cannot keep putting him out there at third base, coach.
13:26He's got, he's not seeing it.
13:27Yeah, especially when you are in spots where, I mean, you're desperate for a win,
13:31and you're avoiding getting swept for the second time by Arizona.
13:35Yes, man.
13:35And it's a game that you kind of semi, had given up already, where, you know,
13:40you had the lead, like you said, and now you're trailing again.
13:43But here comes a break on a high sky fly ball to left.
13:47Adamas gets a double on a ball that pelts the dude in the chest because he loses it in the
13:51sun.
13:51Those are the breaks that you're supposed to take and go out there and win the game.
13:55You can't then lose the game because you give them two breaks of your own.
14:00That's the part that's so frustrating.
14:02Trevor McDonald ends up getting saddled with the loss.
14:06Three runs, two of them earned, but he went six and a third.
14:10Two earned runs, six strikeouts, two walks, gave up six hits.
14:14It got a little wobbly there in the fifth or in the sixth and seventh inning for him.
14:18But outside of that, pretty well-pitched game.
14:22I don't know.
14:24Put that up against what Malley did last night and also what he's done in general.
14:29And Logan Webb is back in Colorado on Friday.
14:32They've got a decision to make.
14:33I want Trevor McDonald to stay in this rotation.
14:35Yeah, I think that they'll make that decision.
14:37You never know because, you know, Malley's a guy that they're paying big money to
14:41and McDonald has the option.
14:43And so, Malley probably doesn't have any options.
14:45I don't know where he's at.
14:46No, no, no, no, no.
14:47He's a long-time fan.
14:49He's either bullpen or he's, you know, miscellaneous blister or, you know,
14:54the old cracked fingernail can be a good one too because that, you know,
14:57it takes about 10 days for those things to heal as well.
14:59He's on a one-year $10 million deal and $3 million of it was a signing bonus.
15:04I get what you're saying and you're not wrong, but if I'm the Giants,
15:08you're not in a position to kind of play that game.
15:10I just don't think you're in a position to play the game of he's here,
15:13he's a veteran, and makes money.
15:15I'm sorry.
15:16Like, so whether that's a hangnail, whether that's the bullpen,
15:20whatever it may be, Trevor McDonald should stay in the rotation.
15:26To me, that feels very much like the Bryce Eldridge puzzle that they created
15:31for themselves when everybody was healthy.
15:35Devers, Arise, Chapman, Adamas, Schmidt, Eldridge.
15:41Yep, it's a puzzle and you get to figure it out.
15:44Now we got another one.
15:45Now you have six starters.
15:48Trevor McDonald is one of the best five.
15:50And this is getting more and more frustrating by the day.
15:54And Trevor McDonald is, by the way, he's also a system guy.
15:58This is your farm hand, as opposed to Mally, who is an off-the-street free agent.
16:04And with every loss, I'm going to put more and more attention on my farm products.
16:10Right.
16:11Guys, we're going to be here for the next three to five years or whatever.
16:13That's exactly right.
16:14So McDonald is in if I'm in charge, which I'm not.
16:18And I think you have an eye toward Carson Wisenhunt in the future
16:21and maybe Carson Seymour as this thing continues to devolve.
16:25If it devolves the way that this has, then, yeah, you're going to have to start making
16:29those real decisions about how you want to approach implementing some of your future pieces
16:34into this team and this season that is going.
16:37It's not even going sideways.
16:39This thing is borderline the Hindenburg.
16:41Oh, the humanity.
16:42I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember the Hindenburg like I am,
16:46but it was a blimp and the thing exploded.
16:50And somebody who was, you know, filming it, I think it was Zapruder,
16:53hence the Zapruder film, and he shouts, oh, the humanity as that thing catches fire
16:59and plummets to the earth.
17:01This is Hindenburgian right now.
17:03Not Borgian, Bergian.
17:08I'm looking at the still as the catcher's about to catch the ball
17:11and the purple sleeves of Willie Adamas are pumping and churning.
17:16Halfway home.
17:16No, he's, I give him 12 feet, and the catcher was a great short hop on the backhand side.
17:23Yep, yep.
17:24He picked it.
17:25It was a sweet pick.
17:26It's a terrible send.
17:28Yeah.
17:28It's just a terrible send.
17:31It's situationally, mathematically, it's a terrible send.
17:38I don't know what else to say.
17:40It's a terrible send.
17:41Nick in the city.
17:42Hi, Nick.
17:43We'll take your calls.
17:44We're taking your calls.
17:44We got a lot of giant stuff to get to today as they get swept by Arizona.
17:48They're on Willard and Dibs.
17:49Hey, Nick, thanks for calling.
17:51Of course.
17:51Thanks for having me, guys.
17:53I went to the first game of the year last night, and right when I walk in, we get a
17:57Casey
17:58Schmidt bomb.
17:58Okay.
17:59Off to a good start.
18:00But then, you know, we're quickly reminded that we have, oh my God, two horrible contracts
18:06in the infield at shortstop and third base, which I know there's been a lot of different
18:11scapegoats this year.
18:12It was Rafi.
18:13It might have been Buster.
18:14It might have been Tony.
18:15But like, I think it starts with Buster kind of digging deep and being like, okay, where
18:20are we spending too much money and getting no productivity out of?
18:23And for me, man, it's shortstop and third base.
18:27And I think pitching is okay to decent, to half decent, you know?
18:32And I love, of course, Logan Webb, who's, you know, not in right now, but, and I love
18:36Ray.
18:37But, you know, you kind of look in beyond that.
18:39And if I'm Buster, man, like I'm building around Arise.
18:43I'm building around Jung-Hoo Lee and Ramos and maybe keep Endeavors.
18:48And that's, that's kind of all I got.
18:50Thanks, Nick.
18:51Appreciate that.
18:52I, like, I don't think there's any question in this moment, the way people feel about the
18:56money being spent on the left side of the infield.
18:59But, I mean, the crazy thing is, is maybe worse than the money they're spending is the
19:06control that they gave up of the situation.
19:08There's nothing they can do.
19:10Right.
19:10If Willie and Matt don't want to leave, they're not leaving.
19:13Period.
19:14Adamus, two of the six hits today, both doubles.
19:17OPS now above 700.
19:19No, he's...
19:19Leads the majors in errors at shortstop.
19:22And this base running, it's on the base coach more than it's on him.
19:26100%.
