00:08:26Janet.
00:08:27Janet, it's me.
00:08:29It's Paul.
00:08:41Janet!
00:08:50Hello? Hello, operator.
00:08:53This is Lieutenant Stewart calling.
00:08:54Can you send the house doctor to day 16C right away?
00:08:56It's very urgent.
00:09:05Well?
00:09:14What is it?
00:09:16What's wrong with her, doctor?
00:09:18I'm not sure.
00:09:19I think she's suffering from some sort of shock.
00:09:23I'll be frank with you, Lieutenant.
00:09:25This is a little outside my line.
00:09:28But there must be something you can do for her.
00:09:30We ought to call in a nerve specialist, a psychiatrist.
00:09:34Can you suggest one?
00:09:35There's a very good man in the hotel, Dr. Cross.
00:09:38If we're lucky, we might find him in.
00:09:41This is Dr. Blair.
00:09:43Will you see if Dr. Cross is in for me?
00:09:46Thanks.
00:09:48Cross has had a lot of experience with this sort of thing.
00:09:51I'm all right for a broken arm or an old-fashioned hangover.
00:09:55But when it comes to the mind, well...
00:09:58Hello, Dr. Cross.
00:10:00This is Blair in the hotel.
00:10:01How are you?
00:10:03Say, I've run into something that's right up your alley.
00:10:06One of the guests here has had some sort of shock.
00:10:10No, I... I don't know what caused it.
00:10:13Oh, would you?
00:10:14Well, that's mighty nice of you.
00:10:17Thanks, doctor.
00:10:19816 C.
00:10:21He'll be right with us.
00:10:23She was so alive when I saw her last.
00:10:26I can't quite believe this.
00:10:29Better snap out of it, Lieutenant.
00:10:31I don't want another patient.
00:10:33Dr. Cross is one of the best men in this part of the country.
00:10:35I'm very happy that he's going to have a look at it.
00:10:38I don't get it.
00:10:40What could have brought it on?
00:10:41I wish I could tell you.
00:10:43The mind's a strange instrument.
00:10:45What affects me may not bother you in the slightest.
00:10:48The workings of the mind depend on so many things inside as well as outside.
00:10:52You can't make hard and fast rules.
00:10:54Well, I suppose it is plausible that she hasn't been feeling well.
00:10:58Worrying about me, not...
00:10:59not knowing whether I was dead or alive.
00:11:02Then coming here and not finding me.
00:11:05That'll be Dr. Cross.
00:11:10Good morning, Doctor.
00:11:11Good morning.
00:11:12I appreciate your promptness.
00:11:13Not at all.
00:11:14The sooner you get to a case of shock, the better.
00:11:18This is Lieutenant Stewart.
00:11:19Dr. Cross.
00:11:20How do you do, Lieutenant?
00:11:21Thanks for coming, Doctor.
00:11:22My wife is in the bedroom.
00:11:28She doesn't know me.
00:11:29She doesn't seem to know anything.
00:11:32Were you here when it happened?
00:11:34I just got in a few minutes ago.
00:11:36When I opened the door, she was sitting on the divan.
00:11:38Her eyes were wide open.
00:11:40She was staring at nothing.
00:11:43Did you notice anything peculiar about her actions when you saw her last?
00:11:48I've been a prisoner of war for two years.
00:11:49I've just come home.
00:11:50Oh, I see.
00:11:52She's had a rugged time of it, all right.
00:11:54First thinking I was dead.
00:11:55Then hearing from me.
00:11:57On top of all that, my plane was 12 hours late.
00:12:00Would you say that she was a nervous, imaginative girl?
00:12:04No, sir.
00:12:04I've known her all my life.
00:12:05We came from the same small town in Michigan.
00:12:08Went to school together.
00:12:10Well, she's just a nice kid.
00:12:14What's wrong with her, Doctor?
00:12:15She's had a nervous collapse.
00:12:17Went into shock.
00:12:22Where did you find her?
00:12:23In the living room.
00:12:25In the living room?
00:12:29You said she was sitting on the divan.
00:12:32Yes, right here.
00:12:33I see.
00:12:35What do you think it would have caused her, Doctor?
00:12:37Well, that's difficult to say.
00:12:46You have no idea how long she might have been sitting there.
00:12:49No.
00:12:51Oh, the clerk did say she phoned down about one in the morning.
00:12:53Between one and eight-thirty.
00:12:56What difference does that make, Doctor?
00:12:57The important thing is what can you do for her?
00:13:00It's hard for a doctor to make promises.
00:13:02We can only do our best.
00:13:04Are you living permanently at the hotel?
00:13:06No.
00:13:07As a matter of fact, we've got to clear out by noon.
00:13:09Oh, I see.
00:13:10But then I'd better take her to my place.
00:13:13She's going to need someone with her night and day.
00:13:15Doctor Cross has a private sanatorium just out of town.
00:13:19I see.
00:13:20Believe me, Lieutenant, it's best for her.
00:13:22But there must be a hospital here in San Francisco.
00:13:25I'd like to be near her.
00:13:26Of course.
00:13:27But I'm at my place every day.
00:13:29It's in the country, and she'll get plenty of fresh air and quiet.
00:13:33If I were you, Lieutenant, I'd listen to Doctor Cross.
00:13:37Okay.
00:13:38You men know best.
00:13:40Just get her well again.
00:13:42I was getting ready to leave when you called.
00:13:44I'll take Mrs. Stewart up with me now.
00:13:53Hello, this is Doctor Cross.
00:13:54Will you get my office, please?
00:13:56I'm going along with her, Doctor.
00:13:57I'd rather you wait at Lieutenant until I've been able to give her a thorough examination.
00:14:01It's quite possible your presence may excite her and do her more harm than good.
00:14:06It's just that I...
00:14:07It's been so long since I've seen her.
00:14:09Why don't you drive up with me tomorrow?
00:14:11Miss Jordan, will you call the hospital and tell Miss Hatfield to have a room ready for a new patient?
00:14:18We'll be there shortly.
00:14:20Yes, that's right.
00:14:21You pick us up at the hotel.
00:14:24Right.
00:14:28You'd better pack a bag for your wife, Lieutenant.
00:14:30Thanks, Doctor.
00:14:38If I'm from Dr. Cross's office, we were to pick up a patient.
00:14:41Oh, yes.
00:14:41They're on their way down now.
00:14:49Your car's waiting, Doctor.
00:14:52This is Miss Jordan from my office, Lieutenant Stewart.
00:14:55How do you do, Lieutenant?
00:14:56Mrs. Stewart has had a nervous collapse.
00:14:58What a shame.
00:15:00Don't you worry, Lieutenant.
00:15:01We'll soon have her well again.
00:15:04You'll call for me in the morning, right?
00:15:06Yes, I'll pick you up at 11.30.
00:15:31Put her to bed and have Dr. Stevens give her an injection of scopolamine.
00:15:36Yes, Doctor.
00:15:42Miss Hatfield.
00:15:44Good morning, Doctor.
00:15:45Your patient is coming in at the ambulance entrance.
00:15:47You have a room ready?
00:15:48Yes, I have, sir.
00:15:57Good morning, sir.
00:15:58Good morning, Doctor.
00:16:00How is she?
00:16:01Glad to relax, sir.
00:16:02What's her trouble?
00:16:03Amnesia shock.
00:16:05She's had her injection.
00:16:07Yes, I...
00:16:09She's ready to talk now.
00:16:12That'll be all.
00:16:13Yes, sir.
00:16:27I'm Dr. Cross, Mrs. Stewart.
00:16:31I am your friend.
00:16:33I'm here to help you.
00:16:35I want you to think.
00:16:38You're going to remember things now.
00:16:42You went to meet your husband at the Belmont Arms.
00:16:46Do you remember that?
00:16:49You were worried about Paul.
00:16:52He didn't arrive on time.
00:16:55You were too nervous to sleep.
00:16:59Did you walk out on the balcony?
00:17:03I...
00:17:04Yes.
00:17:07I walked out on the balcony.
00:17:09You see, you can remember.
00:17:12Now, what did you see from the balcony?
00:17:17They...
00:17:17They were...
00:17:21quarreling.
00:17:22You heard them distinctly?
00:17:25I...
00:17:26Did you hear them distinctly?
00:17:31He's...
00:17:32trying to...
00:17:35stop her.
00:17:36He's...
00:17:38going to...
00:17:41hit her.
00:17:42He's...
00:17:44hitting her head.
00:17:46He's...
00:17:48killing her.
00:17:50Who?
00:17:52Who's hurting the woman?
00:17:56That...
00:17:57man.
00:17:59He's her...
00:18:01husband.
00:18:04He's...
00:18:05killing her.
00:18:18He's...
00:18:19Well?
00:18:20She knows, Elaine.
00:18:21She remembers.
00:18:23Her room was opposite my apartment.
00:18:25She walked out on the balcony.
00:18:26and she heard everything.
00:18:36Yes?
00:18:38Can you come now, Doctor?
00:18:39They're having trouble with Mr. Edwards again.
00:18:41Yes.
00:18:51Give her a kiss.
00:18:56I don't know!
00:18:56Yes.
00:18:56No, no, no, no.
00:18:56It's no...
00:18:57No, no, no.
00:18:58No, no, no.
00:19:00No, no, no.
00:19:14Darling, I didn't think you'd ever get here.
00:19:23I love you.
00:19:25I love you.
00:19:33You've got a headache. I can tell from your eyes.
00:19:38Yes, it's bursting.
00:19:47You did it?
00:19:50Yes. Yes, I did it.
00:19:53It was horrible, Elaine.
00:19:56I had the porter take the trunk down.
00:20:00I told the hotel manager I was joining my wife and Carmel for a few days...
00:20:07to ship the trunk to my lodge.
00:20:09No one knew she was in town last night?
00:20:11No, she came up the back way.
00:20:14She wanted to surprise us, remember?
00:20:19You're not sorry.
00:20:22Are you?
00:20:24I wish I'd called the police.
00:20:26I lost my head. I didn't mean to kill her. There was no premeditation.
00:20:31But now I've concealed her body. I've shipped the trunk to my lodge.
00:20:35And you know as well as I do there's only one answer for that.
00:20:38I shouldn't have listened to you, Elaine.
00:20:40Think, darling.
00:20:41What would have happened if you'd called the police?
00:20:43Manslaughter means 20 years.
00:20:45What would that have done to you, to us?
00:20:47I don't know.
00:20:47Would you have wanted it that way?
00:20:51Now no one knows.
00:20:52We're safe.
00:20:53You're forgetting Janet Stewart, aren't you?
00:20:55She knows. What if she talks?
00:20:56I haven't forgotten her.
00:20:58She can't tell what she's seen as long as she's in this condition, can she?
00:21:01The shock will wear off in a couple of weeks at the most.
00:21:04It'll wear off if you let it, Dick.
00:21:07Elaine, I'm a doctor.
00:21:08She'll talk only if you let her.
00:21:11You mean too much to me.
00:21:13It's the only way out, Dick.
00:21:15It's the one and only way out for us.
00:21:17If I don't know, Elaine, I've got to think.
00:21:40Good morning, Mrs. Penny.
00:21:41Good morning, Doctor.
00:21:42You're looking very well today.
00:21:44Thank you, Doctor.
00:21:45Good morning, Doctor.
00:21:45Good morning, Miss Hatfield.
00:21:46This is Lieutenant Stewart.
00:21:47Miss Hatfield's our head nurse.
00:21:49How do you do, Lieutenant?
00:21:50Is Miss Jordan with Mrs. Stewart?
00:21:51Yes, she is, Doctor.
00:21:58Good morning, Lieutenant.
00:22:03Janet.
00:22:06Darling, it's me.
00:22:10It's Paul.
00:22:13I'm home, dear.
00:22:20She's worse.
00:22:22Not really.
00:22:22She was restless and we gave her a sedative.
00:22:26You've got to be patient, Lieutenant.
00:22:27It's going to take time.
00:22:29And you must try to stop thinking of your wife as she was.
00:22:33You see, when you were reported killed,
00:22:35she had a terrible time adjusting herself, but she did.
00:22:39Then when the news came that you were alive and on your way home,
00:22:43it was hard for her subconscious to accept that because the first adjustment had been so difficult.
00:22:49Then, of course, when your plane was late, she thought she'd been tricked, that you'd never sent that wire.
00:22:55Don't try and let me off easily, Doctor.
00:22:57Give it to me straight.
00:22:59Tell me, can you help her?
00:23:03That's a very difficult question to answer.
00:23:06Sit down, Lieutenant.
00:23:09The mind is a delicate, fragile thing.
00:23:12It's almost as intangible as faith.
00:23:16And that's what you're going to need.
00:23:18A lot of faith in yourself and in your wife and in me.
00:23:22Please don't think I haven't faith in you, Doctor.
00:23:25Because I have.
00:23:27But yesterday, after you left with Janet, I needed someone to talk to.
00:23:32Of course.
00:23:33So I went to the army hospital and I talked with some of the doctors.
00:23:37I told them Janet was in your care.
00:23:39They said that I couldn't find a better man.
00:23:42But, well, you know how it is.
00:23:44I figured that maybe two minds might be better than one.
00:23:47And I asked if another opinion mightn't help.
00:23:50Well, that's perfectly understandable.
00:23:53If you want a consultant, by all means, bring one in.
00:23:56Thanks.
00:23:57They recommended Dr. Franklin Harvey.
00:24:00Harvey?
00:24:01Well, I studied under him.
00:24:03He's probably the best man in his field.
00:24:06Oh, that's swell, Doctor.
00:24:07I was a little embarrassed.
00:24:08I didn't want you to think that...
00:24:09Not at all.
00:24:10I'll phone Dr. Harvey and have him out here.
00:24:13Good.
00:24:14Well, I might as well go back to town.
00:24:16If it's all right, I'll run out again tomorrow.
00:24:19For Mrs. Stewart's sake, I'm going to have to ask you to observe our regular visiting days, Sundays and Thursdays.
00:24:25I'll phone Dr. Harvey and try to have him out here Thursday so that you can talk with him then.
00:24:29Okay, we'll make it Thursday.
00:24:31Oh, I thought you'd like to know, Lieutenant. She's resting quite easily now.
00:24:35Thanks.
00:24:36Goodbye, Doctor.
00:24:37Miss Jordan.
00:24:38Goodbye.
00:25:15Mrs. Stewart.
00:25:19Mrs. Stewart.
00:25:20Mrs. Stewart.
00:25:23You're going out on that balcony again, Mrs. Stewart.
00:25:27You're looking into the other apartment.
00:25:30You're listening to the argument.
00:25:33Do you remember what happened to the woman?
00:25:37He's hitting her.
00:25:39He's hitting her with the candlestick.
00:25:42And now he's hitting you.
00:25:44Hitting you with the candlestick.
00:25:46Hitting your head again and again.
00:25:51The candlestick is killing you.
00:25:53Soon you won't be able to remember anything.
00:25:57You can't hear the sound now.
00:26:01You can't hear anything.
00:26:04You can't hear.
00:26:08You can't remember.
00:26:11You can't remember.
00:26:15You can't remember.
00:26:17You can't remember.
00:26:18Edward's condition is deteriorating rapidly.
00:26:22If this continues, we will have to take steps to put him in a more suitable institution.
00:26:30She's exhausted.
00:26:32You haven't got far to go.
00:26:34Elaine, do you think you could manage it here alone for the weekend?
00:26:38Certainly. Why?
00:26:39The trunk should be there tomorrow.
00:26:43I've been wondering.
00:26:45There are no servants at the lodge.
00:26:47What will happen when the trunk is delivered and there's no one to receive it?
00:26:50Nothing. They'll just leave it on the back porch.
00:26:52When are you leaving?
00:26:54Tomorrow.
00:26:56Dr. Harvey's due here this afternoon.
00:27:00Harvey? Coming here for what?
00:27:01Stewart requested a consultation.
00:27:04You're not going to let him examine her.
00:27:05Of course. How would it have looked if I'd said no?
00:27:08But he might discover something.
00:27:09He has no reason to be suspicious.
00:27:11You can't risk it. I won't let you.
00:27:12I know what I'm doing, Elaine.
00:27:14Darling, you're not thinking clearly.
00:27:16I've never seen things so clearly before in my whole life.
00:27:39You'll send me a report on her spinal test.
00:27:41Yes, Dr. Harvey.
00:27:43Any other specimens?
00:27:45Yes.
00:27:51You know, Richard, I'm not sure I completely agree this was all brought on by her husband's late arrival.
00:27:58That was a contributing circumstance.
00:28:00I feel there may have been something else.
00:28:03Well, that's always possible, of course, sir.
00:28:05But I found no evidence of it.
00:28:08Just speculation.
00:28:12Will you have a cigar, sir?
00:28:14Yes, thank you.
00:28:16Let's continue the present treatment and see how she comes along.
00:28:19Yes.
00:28:21I notice, Richard, you've been giving her sedatives.
00:28:25Yes, I have.
00:28:26She's been pretty difficult at times.
00:28:30I'd go easy on them.
00:28:32If she's under sedation, there's no way of knowing when she comes back to normal.
00:28:35No, I'd plan to take her off them within the next 24 hours.
00:28:39Fine.
00:28:40By the way, how's Margaret?
00:28:42I'm joining her at the lodge.
00:28:44Give her my regards when you see her.
00:28:46I will, thank you, sir.
00:28:48Well, I'd better talk with the young man.
00:28:49Sometimes I wonder which are more difficult, patients or their families.
00:29:06Hiya, beautiful.
00:29:07Hi.
00:29:09What a night.
00:29:11You don't happen to know a blonde who'd like to relax with me, do you?
00:29:14That's what I thought you'd say.
00:29:16Coffee?
00:29:17Please.
00:29:18And poor Edwards Eastorms don't do him any good.
00:29:21He kept ducking into his closet and slamming the door after him.
00:29:23I finally had a locket.
00:29:27How's your patient?
00:29:28All right, I guess.
00:29:29I was talking with her husband.
00:29:31It's kind of tough coming home and finding a wife in that condition.
00:29:34Yes.
00:29:36Can't figure Dr. Cross's treatment.
00:29:39Why keep the poor guy from seeing his wife?
00:29:42I think it would help snap her out of it if she saw more of him.
00:29:44Dr. Cross doesn't want to get her excited.
00:29:46After all, the attack was brought on by worry over him.
00:29:50Yeah.
00:29:52That was close.
00:29:54Good.
00:30:05Good.
00:30:11Good.
00:30:12Good.
00:30:18Ryan, How are you?
00:30:18Good.
00:30:19Long, no.
00:30:19Come on, Tate.
00:30:20Good.
00:30:25Oh, my God.
00:30:58Oh, my God.
00:31:28It's time to turn in.
00:31:29So you better tuck your patient in bed and get a good night's sleep.
00:31:32Yes, I should be up there now.
00:31:33Tell me, is it true that doctors get a night off once in a while?
00:31:36If you had a night off, you wouldn't know what to do with it.
00:31:39Wouldn't I?
00:31:43Wouldn't I?
00:31:43Good night, doctor.
00:31:45Good night.
00:31:52Well, another stormy weekend.
00:31:54It isn't my night off.
00:32:01Well, anyway, the rain will help Jane on her day off.
00:32:10Good night.
00:32:40Who's there?
00:32:41Why, Mr. Edwards, you shouldn't be in here.
00:32:44Come, I'll take you back.
00:32:45Don't I?
00:33:17Don't be afraid.
00:33:23We won't let the storm hurt you.
00:33:26You're coming back to your room, aren't you, Mr. Edwards?
00:33:30Aren't you, Mr. Edwards?
00:33:38That's fine.
00:33:40Come along.
00:33:45Take care of him, Frank.
00:33:46Yes, doctor.
00:33:47Come along, sir.
00:33:48Are you all right, Elaine?
00:33:49Yes.
00:33:53There, there, Mrs. Stewart.
00:33:54It's all over.
00:33:55He killed her.
00:33:56He hit her on the head and he killed her.
00:33:58Her husband killed her.
00:34:09Edwards became very violent last night.
00:34:11This morning we found that he had a key hidden away.
00:34:13I ordered the lock on his door to be changed.
00:34:16As for Mrs. Stewart, she's suffering from hallucinations.
00:34:19She keeps insisting that she witnessed a murder, which obviously...
00:34:24Come in.
00:34:27Oh, hello, Lieutenant.
00:34:29They told me I'd find you here.
00:34:31I hope I'm not interrupting.
00:34:33Not at all.
00:34:34It's kind of rough, isn't it?
00:34:36Yeah.
00:34:37She's out of her head.
00:34:38She's got a crazy idea she saw a murder.
00:34:41What am I going to do?
00:34:43Ah, you're going to sit tight.
00:34:44She's in good hands.
00:34:45So they keep telling me, but...
00:34:47Well, she's getting worse.
00:34:49I'm thinking of taking her back to San Francisco to a hospital there.
00:34:54I, uh, I wouldn't do that if I were you, Lieutenant.
00:34:58Dr. Cross's tops, you know that.
00:35:00You brought Harvey in to consult.
00:35:01You can't do any better than that.
00:35:03But I can't just sit around and watch her get worse.
00:35:06I've got to do something.
00:35:07Lieutenant, I wouldn't try to kid you for the world.
00:35:10So far, we've tried to snap her out of it with quiet and rest and simple foods.
00:35:13Now, there are a dozen other things we can do.
00:35:15Electric therapy, insulin shock.
00:35:17Insulin shock?
00:35:19They use that in the Army on guys who blow their tops.
00:35:22Well, sure they do, because it often helps.
00:35:24But you're not going to turn it down in that account, are you?
00:35:26No.
00:35:26Well, then relax.
00:35:27The setup here is perfect.
00:35:28Everybody's rooting for you.
00:35:30Now, just take it easy.
00:35:32You mean that?
00:35:34Okay.
00:35:37Say, put in a couple of extra licks, Doc.
00:35:39I'd kind of like to take her home soon.
00:35:42Okay, Lieutenant.
00:35:42We'll do everything we possibly can for her.
00:35:46Bye-bye, Doctor.
00:35:46Goodbye.
00:35:47Come on, take your part.
00:35:49Look at this.
00:35:50Mrs. Cross is dead.
00:35:51What?
00:35:53The body of Mrs. Margaret Cross, wife of the noted psychiatrist,
00:35:56has just been recovered from its resting place among the rocks at Point Lovis.
00:36:02Mrs. Cross has been missing since Friday night.
00:36:05Garner Jess Haines has pronounced the death accidental.
00:36:15Good morning, Doctor.
00:36:16You have our deepest sympathy.
00:36:26I'm terribly sorry, Doctor.
00:36:29Will you come in, Miss Jew?
00:36:30Yes, sir.
00:36:38You're the perfect picture of a heartbroken husband.
00:36:41Am I?
00:36:43I've missed you.
00:36:45Driving back, there was time to think.
00:36:47I got to thinking about you.
00:36:50I asked myself, is she worth what I've done?
00:37:04Well, that was a very satisfactory answer.
00:37:06How did things go while I was away?
00:37:08Oh, darling, things are going so well, I can hardly believe it.
00:37:10What do you mean?
00:37:11Mr. Edwards got out during the storm.
00:37:13He went into a room.
00:37:14What?
00:37:15He went after me.
00:37:16I struggled with him.
00:37:18She woke up and confused Mr. Edwards with you.
00:37:20She was thrown back into that night at the hotel.
00:37:22Oh, Elaine, that undoes everything I've tried to do.
00:37:25No, Stevens and Miss Hatfield heard her.
00:37:27They're convinced she's insane.
00:37:29Now, no matter what she says, they'll think she has hallucinations.
00:37:32I see.
00:37:33But you don't see, darling.
00:37:35Before, you were trying to make her forget.
00:37:37Now she can talk her head off and no one will believe her.
00:37:40If we can encourage her to talk,
00:37:42convince her husband that she's insane,
00:37:44we can keep her here as long as it suits us.
00:37:46Then have her committed.
00:38:12darling, Janet, darling, it's me.
00:38:18Wake up.
00:38:21I'm here, dear.
00:38:38I've waited all night for you, darling.
00:38:43What took you so long?
00:38:45Don't worry.
00:38:46I'm with you now.
00:38:48We have to be out by morning, Paul.
00:38:52They won't let us stay.
00:38:57Lieutenant Stewart.
00:39:03You shouldn't be in here.
00:39:07Paul.
00:39:09It's him.
00:39:10Who is it, dear?
00:39:12Him.
00:39:13He killed her.
00:39:15He killed his wife.
00:39:18He picked something up, Paul, and he hit her with it.
00:39:22He was arguing with her.
00:39:24And he killed her.
00:39:25I know, I know, dear.
00:39:28You've upset her, Lieutenant.
00:39:29You shouldn't have come in here.
00:39:30Come outside with me.
00:39:31Give her a hypodermic nurse.
00:39:33Don't leave me here.
00:39:34He'll kill me.
00:39:35Come back.
00:39:35Easy, Paul.
00:39:36What is it, Doctor?
00:39:37What's happened to her?
00:39:38Lieutenant, I'm going to be perfectly frank with you.
00:39:40What you've just heard is something I've been afraid of.
00:39:43There are times when patients emerging from amnesia
00:39:47suffer from delusions.
00:39:49It doesn't happen often.
00:39:50I'd hoped it wouldn't happen in her case.
00:39:52But you heard her yourself.
00:39:54But why?
00:39:56Why?
00:39:56Well, that's hard to explain.
00:40:00But if you come with me, I think I might be able to clarify it for you.
00:40:11Hello, Mrs. Penny.
00:40:13Good day, Doctor.
00:40:14How are you feeling today?
00:40:15Just fine, Doctor.
00:40:16Just fine.
00:40:18That's a lovely thing you're knitting there.
00:40:19It's a shawl for one of my friends.
00:40:22Everyone here treating you well?
00:40:24Oh, yes.
00:40:25They're very nice to me.
00:40:26Doctor Stevens hasn't tried to kill me with that needle for a long while now.
00:40:30Neither has Miss Hatfield.
00:40:32Haven't I told you many times, Mrs. Penny,
00:40:34that no one here is trying to kill you?
00:40:36Oh, yes, they are.
00:40:38You all want to kill me.
00:40:39You're murderers, all of you.
00:40:41But I've learned.
00:40:42I'm too smart for you.
00:40:55What you've just heard, Lieutenant, for the second time,
00:40:59is the typical attitude of many of our patients towards the hospital staff.
00:41:03But that old lady, she seemed all right.
00:41:06Mrs. Penny is suffering from a paranoid form of dementia praecox,
00:41:10characterized either by delusions of grandeur or delusions of persecution, or both.
00:41:15The patient, when confined to the hospital,
00:41:18almost invariably becomes convinced that the doctors and nurses
00:41:21who are treating him are really murderers intent on killing him.
00:41:24This delusion is quite common among mental cases in an institution of this sort.
00:41:29Are you trying to tell me my wife is out of her mind?
00:41:31No.
00:41:33Out of the mind denotes complete loss of reason.
00:41:36Mrs. Stewart hasn't reached that stage.
00:41:38But she's got the same crazy idea as the other patients.
00:41:41Right now, she's merely suffering delusions.
00:41:44However, I feel it's only fair to tell you, Lieutenant,
00:41:47that this condition can become worse.
00:41:50Our fight now is to prevent further deterioration of her mind.
00:41:54You've got to help her, Doctor.
00:41:57You've got to get her well again.
00:41:59I'll do everything I can.
00:42:01Believe me.
00:42:33Come now, Mrs. Stewart, you shouldn't be out of bed.
00:42:35Will you help me, please?
00:42:38Please, please help me.
00:42:40Get the police here, please.
00:42:42We don't need the police, Mrs. Stewart.
00:42:43You come along with me and everything will be okay.
00:42:45You don't understand.
00:42:46There's nothing the matter with me.
00:42:47I want the police.
00:42:49That doctor's a murderer.
00:42:50All right, you go back to bed and we'll call the police.
00:42:53Don't talk to me as if I were crazy.
00:42:55I'm telling you the truth.
00:42:56Audley, now come along, Mrs. Stewart.
00:42:58No one is going to finish you.
00:42:59No, let me go.
00:42:59It's going to be all right.
00:43:00Audley!
00:43:00Let me go, no.
00:43:02I'm not crazy.
00:43:04I'm not crazy.
00:43:06I wish you could have been there to see her yourself.
00:43:08Yes, I heard about it this morning.
00:43:10She had the usual delusions.
00:43:11She kept insisting that you were a murderer.
00:43:13You know how they get.
00:43:14She wanted me to call the police.
00:43:16For a moment, she became very violent.
00:43:18I had to give her a sedative.
00:43:19I think we ought to do something about her.
00:43:21I agree with you, Doctor.
00:43:22I'll be in to see her in a few minutes.
00:43:24Thank you, sir.
00:43:30There, you see?
00:43:31Everything worked out just as we planned.
00:43:34Yes.
00:43:35Well, smile, darling.
00:43:36It's fallen right in our lap.
00:43:38You don't seem particularly pleased.
00:43:41I am.
00:43:41Of course I am, Elaine.
00:43:42Well, what are you going to do?
00:43:45I'm going to try to find something that will convince her that she's insane.
00:43:51You'd better get back to her now, darling.
00:43:53I'll be over in a few minutes.
00:43:54Right.
00:44:29I'll be over in a few minutes.
00:44:30Do you feel any better today?
00:44:32I'm all right.
00:44:33There's nothing the matter with me.
00:44:36Miss Jordan tells me that you're still talking about some woman I'm supposed to have killed.
00:44:42I've asked you to stop thinking about such things, Mrs. Stewart.
00:44:47But it was your own wife.
00:44:50If I can prove to you that you couldn't have seen me kill my wife,
00:44:54would you believe that this is a delusion you've been suffering from?
00:44:59You were arguing with her about a divorce.
00:45:10If you will look at the date on this newspaper, Mrs. Stewart,
00:45:13you will see that my wife died only a week ago.
00:45:16And so, you have been a patient here for over three weeks now.
00:45:22Three weeks?
00:45:24That's right.
00:45:27So, you see, this has all been a very vivid dream.
00:45:31You must fight these dreams, Mrs. Stewart,
00:45:33or they're going to become worse, and we don't want that to happen.
00:45:36My mind is all right.
00:45:38It's not all right, Mrs. Stewart.
00:45:40Your mind is sick, and it's getting worse.
00:45:42My mind is all right.
00:45:43You wouldn't want your husband to see you in that condition, would you?
00:45:47He doesn't even want to see you when you're like this.
00:45:51You're losing your mind, Mrs. Stewart.
00:45:53No, no.
00:45:54Losing your mind.
00:45:56Oh, no.
00:46:05Thank you, Miss Hatfield.
00:46:07Dr. Cross?
00:46:08Yes?
00:46:09There's someone in your office to see you.
00:46:11Did I have an appointment?
00:46:12No, sir.
00:46:13He's from the district attorney's office of Monterey.
00:46:17Oh, yes.
00:46:45Dr. Cross?
00:46:46Yes?
00:46:48How are you?
00:46:49My name's O'Neal.
00:46:50I'm with the district attorney's office in Monterey County.
00:46:52Oh, yes.
00:46:53What can I do for you?
00:46:55It's in connection with your wife's death, doctor.
00:46:59I thought the case had been closed.
00:47:02Something happened this week that made us consider the possibility
00:47:04that your wife didn't fall into that chasm by accident.
00:47:08I don't understand.
00:47:09A couple of days ago, someone broke into Harwood Lodge,
00:47:12beat Mrs. Harwood into unconsciousness and made off with her valuables.
00:47:16We caught the thief day before yesterday.
00:47:23But what has that to do with Mrs. Cross's death?
00:47:26It may not have anything to do with it.
00:47:30It occurred to us that since the lodge was so close to your place,
00:47:33the man who clubbed Mrs. Harwood may have paid a visit to your wife.
00:47:37You've lived around Point Lobos for nearly 10 years.
00:47:41Mrs. Cross spent much of her time there.
00:47:43She must have known those cliffs pretty well, even at night.
00:47:46She must have known those cliffs.
00:47:48I'd hate to think that she...
00:47:49I'm not saying it was murder, doctor.
00:47:52I'm just checking.
00:47:53Of course.
00:47:55I'll do everything I can to help you.
00:47:57I knew you'd feel that way about it.
00:48:00Have you checked your place to see if anything was missing?
00:48:03I'm sure there isn't, or I'd have noticed it.
00:48:05If it's all right with you, doctor,
00:48:07we'd like to have Mrs. Cross's body exhumed.
00:48:11But the coroner said...
00:48:12It was only a routine examination.
00:48:15Well, I don't know if that's necessary, Mr. O'Neill.
00:48:18You've got your man.
00:48:20All we've got is a drunken old tramp
00:48:22who clubbed Mrs. Harwood and stole a little money in jewelry.
00:48:25We can't know about Mrs. Cross unless the body's exhumed.
00:48:30But it seems almost sacrilegious.
00:48:33Hasn't she been through enough?
00:48:35Haven't I?
00:48:36I'd hoped you'd be more understanding, doctor.
00:48:39Naturally, we'll get a court order,
00:48:40but it would be much simpler if you...
00:48:44If this tramp killed your wife,
00:48:46you want to see him punished, don't you?
00:48:47Of course.
00:48:49Then you can't conscientiously object to the exhumation.
00:48:52No.
00:48:54No, Mr. O'Neill, I can't.
00:48:56If the man is guilty,
00:48:58he must be punished, of course.
00:49:00Thank you, doctor.
00:49:03You'll hear from me one way or the other
00:49:05within the next few days.
00:49:07Thank you for your cooperation.
00:49:30Darling, I've been so worried,
00:49:31I didn't know what had happened to you.
00:49:35Where have you been?
00:49:36The city.
00:49:37When you weren't here for dinner,
00:49:39I began to worry.
00:49:40What did the man from the district attorney's office want?
00:49:43They're going to exhum Margaret's body.
00:49:45You're not going to let them.
00:49:46I had nothing to say about it.
00:49:47They'd get a court order.
00:49:48But why are they?
00:49:49I don't...
00:49:49I think some prowler may have killed her.
00:49:51Prowler?
00:49:52They weren't looking for anything before.
00:49:54She slipped and fell
00:49:55and fractured her skull against the rocks.
00:49:58Now they may discover
00:50:00it wasn't the fall that killed her.
00:50:01They can't prove anything.
00:50:02No.
00:50:03Once they start asking questions,
00:50:05I...
00:50:06That's why I went to the city.
00:50:08I had to make sure
00:50:08that I hadn't overlooked anything
00:50:10in the apartment.
00:50:11Why didn't I report it in the first place?
00:50:13Why did I let you talk me into it?
00:50:15If it weren't for that Stuart girl,
00:50:18if they start asking questions
00:50:19and find her...
00:50:20Maybe they won't find her.
00:50:21We've taken care of everything else so far.
00:50:23If we have to,
00:50:24we'll take care of her too.
00:50:25And you're not helping matters acting this way.
00:50:38If a man wanted to,
00:50:40if he had courage,
00:50:43he could get rid of her
00:50:44and no one would ever know.
00:50:47The doctor has an advantage.
00:50:51I could give her insulin shock treatment.
00:50:56Shock treatment's indicated
00:50:57in a case like hers.
00:50:59I could give her four injections.
00:51:01Then with the last one,
00:51:03an overdose.
00:51:05No one would ever know the difference.
00:51:07Then we'd be safe.
00:51:08No matter what the district attorney's office found,
00:51:10we'd be safe.
00:51:11They'd have nothing on us, Richard.
00:51:13We could get married then.
00:51:15You'd be yourself again, Richard.
00:51:17We'd find peace and quiet here,
00:51:19just the two of us.
00:51:20You don't think I'd do it, do you?
00:51:22Why not?
00:51:24Is her life more important than ours?
00:51:26I've had enough.
00:51:27Look, Elaine,
00:51:28I can't go on like this.
00:51:29Things keep piling up.
00:51:31First it was Margaret,
00:51:32then tricking that child
00:51:33so that she'd forget.
00:51:35Then convincing her
00:51:36that she was insane.
00:51:38There's a limit beyond which
00:51:39even I can't go.
00:51:47Richard,
00:51:49remember the first night
00:51:50I came here?
00:51:53Remember?
00:52:05You were alone.
00:52:08You were sitting here
00:52:10in front of the fireplace
00:52:11with a sick headache.
00:52:13The lights were out.
00:52:15You didn't hear me
00:52:16when I knocked
00:52:17and I opened the door
00:52:18and you said,
00:52:19oh, it's you, Miss Jordan.
00:52:24You called me Miss Jordan
00:52:25then, remember?
00:52:28I told you I had to see you
00:52:30about Mrs. Penny's prescription.
00:52:32You talked to me
00:52:33and you saw that I was tired
00:52:34and you asked me
00:52:35if I wouldn't have a drink.
00:52:37I hesitated
00:52:38and you said,
00:52:40I won't bite your head off,
00:52:42Miss Jordan.
00:52:44We had a drink.
00:52:46Remember?
00:52:49We sat here for a long time
00:52:51and then suddenly you laughed
00:52:53and you said
00:52:54your headache was gone.
00:52:56And you asked me
00:52:57about my family
00:52:58and I told you
00:53:01and we both laughed.
00:53:04Remember?
00:53:12Then you took me
00:53:13in your arms.
00:53:16I know you'll remember that.
00:53:20I won't do it, Elaine.
00:53:22I won't do it.
00:53:29Just a minute,
00:53:30I'm coming.
00:53:38Hello, doctor.
00:53:40Come in.
00:53:42I hope you hadn't gone to bed.
00:53:44No.
00:53:46They told me at the hospital
00:53:47I'd find you here.
00:53:48I didn't expect to see you
00:53:50so soon, Mr. O'Neill.
00:53:52I thought you'd phone me
00:53:53if there were any developments.
00:53:54I had to serve the papers.
00:53:56Oh, yes?
00:53:57Coroner's inquest subpoena.
00:53:59Now it's legal.
00:54:02What did the coroner find?
00:54:05Your wife was murdered, doctor.
00:54:09Oh.
00:54:17Are you sure?
00:54:19Yes, sir.
00:54:21Sit down, Mr. O'Neill.
00:54:26She was beaten over the head,
00:54:28suffered an explosive fracture.
00:54:30Death was practically instantaneous.
00:54:33This prowler you told me about,
00:54:35you think he did it?
00:54:37It seems so.
00:54:38He clubbed Mrs. Harwood.
00:54:40Your wife went out the same way.
00:54:42A pattern.
00:54:43Killers usually follow a pattern.
00:54:45You don't know how she was killed.
00:54:48I mean, the weapon.
00:54:50She was struck with a candlestick.
00:54:52A candlestick?
00:54:53Are you sure?
00:54:55A heavy silver one.
00:54:56How can you know?
00:54:58Microscope.
00:54:59There were particles of silver in the wound.
00:55:01They told us it was a silver object.
00:55:03There were bits of wax mixed in with the silver.
00:55:05They told us it was a candlestick.
00:55:07It must have been a heavy candlestick
00:55:08to have done the damage.
00:55:14Just routine, doctor.
00:55:16A criminal doesn't have much of a chance
00:55:18these days, does he?
00:55:20No, sir.
00:55:24By the way,
00:55:24do you have any silver candlesticks at the lodge?
00:55:28We might have.
00:55:29I'd like your permission to go through the house.
00:55:31The murderer may have left the candlestick behind,
00:55:33in which case we'll get fingerprints.
00:55:35If he got rid of the weapon,
00:55:36we may be able to find the mate.
00:55:38Then we'll know what to look for.
00:55:40Of course.
00:55:40Go right ahead.
00:55:41Thanks.
00:55:44Now, if we can find the candlestick,
00:55:46our troubles are over.
00:55:50By the way,
00:55:51when did you see Mrs. Cross last?
00:55:53Alive, I mean.
00:55:55Oh, a couple of weeks before she was killed.
00:55:58Why?
00:55:59Can you place a little more definitely?
00:56:02I think so.
00:56:04Things had been piling up around here,
00:56:07and I needed a change.
00:56:09So I drove down to Point Lobos
00:56:10on a Friday night.
00:56:12Anyone see you?
00:56:13I don't think so.
00:56:15Why?
00:56:16We're trying to fix the exact time of her death.
00:56:19Well, I'm not sure anyone saw me.
00:56:21I drove down there on Friday night,
00:56:24left there around 9.30 Saturday night.
00:56:28Well, it's not too important.
00:56:32Naturally, I want to do everything I can
00:56:34to help you, Mr. O'Neill.
00:56:36If I think of anything,
00:56:37I'll get in touch with you.
00:56:38Thanks.
00:56:39Sorry to bother you so late.
00:56:40That's all right.
00:56:45See you at the end.
00:56:47Good night, doctor.
00:56:48Good night.
00:56:50Good night.
00:56:50Good night.
00:56:51Good night.
00:56:52Good night.
00:57:13Will thou love her, comfort her, honor and keep her in sickness and in health, and forsaking
00:57:19all others, keep only unto her, so long as she both shall live?
00:57:23I will.
00:57:25What's the matter, Richard?
00:57:27You haven't been yourself lately.
00:57:29Something on your mind?
00:57:31Darling, what's happening with us?
00:57:34Richard, I must speak to you.
00:57:35People are talking about you and that nurse, Miss Jordan.
00:57:40How do you like my hair, Richard?
00:57:42Of course, I had to die.
00:57:45Everyone says it makes me look years younger.
00:57:49I can give her four injections, then with the last one, an overdose.
00:58:12Then we'd be safe.
00:58:14No matter what the district attorney's office found, we'd be safe.
00:58:29Get me Lieutenant Stewart, please.
00:58:32The treatment itself consists of a series of shocks brought on by injections of insulin.
00:58:38The dosage and the degree of shock is gradually increased until we've reached what we feel
00:58:43is the limit the patient system can stand.
00:58:46Well, if you do give Janet this insulin, how certain can you be that it'll help her?
00:58:49I'm neither a miracle man nor a prophet, Lieutenant.
00:58:53If medicine were an exact science and not an art, I might be able to tell you.
00:58:58But you think there's a chance?
00:59:00Yes, I do.
00:59:04I have seen it work in the Army.
00:59:09All right, Doctor, go ahead and try it.
00:59:11Fine.
00:59:12We'll begin the treatment tomorrow morning.
00:59:36Okay, let's go.
00:59:38Fine.
00:59:51Okay.
01:00:01Mm-hmm.
01:00:10We'll give her about an hour and a half.
01:00:59Now, watch her.
01:01:13Now, watch her.
01:01:31We'll bring her out now.
01:01:33No.

01:06:24You can. I won't let you. We've got to go through this.
01:06:26Don't you understand? I can't go through with it.
01:06:27It's her life for hours. No one will ever know.
01:06:30Richard, listen to me. Let go of her.
01:06:31Richard, I love you. Let go of her.
01:06:34Richard! Richard!
01:07:09Richard!
01:07:09Dr. Cross, where is he?
01:07:10Mrs. Stewart.
01:07:11Come along. I may need you.
01:07:20Adrenaline, quickly.
01:07:59Don't worry, son. She'll come out of it in a couple of hours,
01:08:01and you'll be able to take her home in two or three days.
01:08:04I'm very grateful to you, doctor.
01:08:22Oh, Janet, darling.
01:08:29September 13th.
01:08:31In the case of Janet Stewart.
01:08:35I gave her insulin shock again today.
01:08:38For the fourth time.
01:08:47Can you give me a minute?
01:08:54Dr. Harvey completed the treatment successfully.
01:08:58And the case is closed.
01:09:06The third time.
01:09:16There's more than three.
01:09:17The third time.
01:09:24We were able to make a second sentence for a second sentence.
01:09:24Dr. Harvey could continue to make a second sentence.
01:09:30We're going to keep it on the other side.
01:09:32We were going to keep it on the other side.
01:09:33and you're going to keep it on top of the space.
01:09:33Let's go.
